'You can do it and you are not alone' is message at SSP fundraiser

Christine Clair, president of the La Crosse Board of Education, flunked first grade. Clair didn't attend kindergarten, then held half days, because her single parent working mother couldn't get her there. Clair, guest speaker at the seventh annual Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast, shared the twists and turns in her journey to becoming a lawyer and school board president with more than 90 who attended the Nov. 30 breakfast. Along that journey, she learned many lessons. "There is nothing you can't do if you need to do it," she said. And there are people out there who will help you. These life lessons are the foundation of  UW-L's award-winning Self Sufficiency Program. The annual breakfast raises funds for scholarships for SSP graduates during the first four semesters of their college coursework. This year five SSP graduates received $500 each. Recipients included Viterbo University students Dana Evenson, Heidi Lomprey, Katrina Lorenz and Susan Rose, along with Western Technical College student Tammy Stussy. Find out more about the breakfast and new program director Andrea Hansen here. See photos of the event here. Find our more about the program here. UW-L veteran group looked to for ‘best practices;’ young chapter set to offer tips to colleges nationwide

A two-year-old college group that helps veterans at UW-La Crosse is being looked at nationally for its success. The UW-L chapter of Student Veterans of America has been identified by the national organization as an example of 'best practices' for treating vets on campus. A consulting firm will interview UW-L charter officers to find out how it has become so successful so fast. The young chapter has been successful because of the time and effort by its student officers, says Professor Carol Oyster, adviser to the group. “We have instituted a number of services for veterans — such as our veterans' orientation in the fall,” explains Oyster. “This event is known for providing much-needed information and support for our veteran students.” A social group for veterans was organized on campus in 2005. The group affiliated with SVA in 2010 with three vets. This fall, the group grew to 14. The chapter has been successful with its annual “Combat to College,” an orientation for vets to learn about benefits, counseling services and career planning. The chapter also organizes a campus tour and holds programs about social opportunities and college life. The improvements in veteran’s resources haven’t gone unnoticed. The chapter received UW-L’s Outstanding Student Organization award for the 2010-11 academic year. The group’s efforts also helped UW-L maintain its spot on G.I. Jobs’ list of Military Friendly Schools for 2012. UW-L has more than 200 veteran students; 35 started classes this fall. Get more information about services for UW-L veterans at: www.uwlax.edu/vets. "Some form of journalism was the original — even continuous — work of nearly every popular American writer, from Benjamin Franklin all the way to the 1930s, when the 'new media' of the day contributed to creating the image we have (and teach) today of the journalist as fact-based, objective, even impersonal," says Pribek. He will discuss how narrative-based reporting was part of prose writers' and poets' careers. Journalism was part of the literary mainstream, not a separate genre or rival point of view. The free event is a presentation in the 2011-12 William J. and Yvonne Hyde English Department Colloquium Series. To arrange for disability accommodations, contact english@uwlax.edu or call 785.8295.
