Study Abroad Fair to be held Feb. 11
The Study Abroad Fair is the place to find information about opportunities to study abroad. Learn about different study abroad programs from
11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
Study abroad moves to online applications
Students who apply to study abroad will now complete their application online through a web-based software, TDS for Study Abroad.
The software is designed to save time and money by automating processes and making it easier for applicants, staff and administrators. The software integrates with WINGS to populate a general application with students’ information. Other supporting forms and documents are housed on a student’s electronic account, so students can easily track their progress in the application process.
An online application process means students receive instant confirmation when forms are submitted, including activity history logs and automated reminders on missing items. Passport copies, itinerary schedules, pictures and other information may all be uploaded into the students’ electronic file, making a nearly paperless file.
Future options include an online payment system for application fees and deposits, scheduled to be implemented in late spring.
Faculty will see the effect of the online application process through the use of electronic recommendation forms. The recommendation request is sent from the Office of International Education study abroad email at
studyabroad@uwlax.edu . The request includes the applicant’s name, program and term of study abroad, coursework taken with the faculty member and any additional notes the student wants to include. To complete the recommendation, faculty copy the recommendation ID provided and click on the link to complete and submit.
Students’ initial response to the new application process has been overwhelming positive, specifically with regard to efficiency and ease of the process.

Feb. 14 English colloquium is 'Be Mine: Eliza Haywood's Reappropriation of French Erotic Philosophy'
Kate Parker, English, will present "Be Mine: Eliza Haywood's Reappropriation of French Erotic Philosophy" from
2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 14, in 113 Wimberly Hall.
Parker examines Haywood's eighteenth-century English translation of
Le Sopha (1742), an erotic
conte morale (moral "fairy-tale")
by Crébillon
fils. Parker details some suggestive inconsistencies in Haywood's translation, particularly in its reinterpretation of the original
Sopha's depiction of aroused female bodies.
As her translation becomes suffused with a philosophical critique of the
Sopha's dominant sexual paradigm, these descriptions increasingly challenge the pervasive notion of female desire as consistently and (un)naturally responsive in eighteenth-century masculinist philosophy and pornography.
The English Department's 2013-2014 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series event is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, contact
english@uwlax.edu or call 608.785.8295. For more information, visit

Be sweet on healthy desserts
There is nothing wrong with indulging in a sweet treat every now and then. And there is no reason to deprive yourself of your favorite dessert to stay healthy. But, be careful not to make a habit of consuming empty calories from sugar and be mindful of your portion sizes. Chances are you’ll be just as satisfied with a smaller piece of cake or half a cookie as with a decadent portion.
Fruit desserts are a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth while getting a serving of fruit. Try fruit compote, frozen fruit bars, angel food cake with fruit topping, fruit sorbet, poached pears, fruit crisp or fruit fondue. Plain fresh fruit can be quite delicious too.
When baking, make simple substitutions to make your desserts healthier. Substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for extra fiber and nutrients. Use unsweetened applesauce to replace all or part of the oil to cut down on fat. Use nuts or dried fruit to replace all or part of the chocolate chips. And you can usually decrease the sugar in recipes without altering the taste.
You can even enjoy chocolate in moderation without feeling guilty. Dark chocolate has received quite a bit of attention recently for its health benefits. Cocoa is a bean after all. Dark chocolate does have antioxidants and resveretrol, which are good for your heart health. Just be mindful of the portion size. A one-ounce square of dark chocolate typically contains 110 calories.

Database trials at Murphy Library
Librarians are evaluating several databases to determine if they should be added to library collections. Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to try these databases and
let the library know how the databases meet their information needs.
Current trials are:
- Social Explorer (Oxford University Press). An online research tool that provides access to historical census data and demographic information. Includes U.S. Census data from 1790 to 2000, all annual updates from the American Community Survey, and the Religious Congregations and Membership Study from 1980 to 2000. Trial ends: Sunday, Feb. 23.
- Oxford Scholarship Online - Biology. Provides access to more than 238 electronic books in the biological sciences published by Oxford University Press, University of California Press and the University of Chicago Press. Trial ends: Monday, June 30.
- Dictionary of American Regional English (DARE). This dictionary documents words, phrases and pronunciations that vary from one place to another across the United States. The entries in DARE include regional pronunciations, variant forms, some etymologies and regional and social distributions of the words and phrases. It includes interactive maps and audio clips. Trial ends: Saturday, March 1.
As database trials come and go, people can find active trials at the library's "Current Trials" page at
http://libguides.uwlax.edu/trials.
Studies suggest that exercise helps lower risk of Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer’s is the No. 6 leading cause of death in the United States.
Preventing Alzheimer’s is a question that continues to intrigue researchers. There is no clear answer yet, but progress continues.
Momentum finding prevention strategies is on the rise. In fact, regular physical exercise may be a beneficial strategy to lower the risk of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia. Some evidence suggests exercise may directly benefit brain cells by increasing blood and oxygen flow. Even stronger evidence suggests exercise may protect brain health through its proven benefits to the cardiovascular system. Because of the known cardiovascular benefits, a medically-approved exercise program is a valuable part of any overall wellness plan.
Like exercise, diet may have its greatest impact on brain health through its effect on heart health.
Try this challenge if you haven’t started already:
10-10-10. Little bursts of activity during the day pay off big. Your goal: 10 minutes of moderate activity three times a day. If this looks familiar, you are right:
Wellness At Work.
