How to file for financial aid for summer and fall 2012 and spring 2013; UW-L priority date is March 15
File the 2012-13 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on the web at www.fafsa.gov. Both parents and students should use their completed 2011 Federal Income Tax Forms to complete the FAFSA. If 2011 federal taxes are filed online, within one to two weeks after filing, streamline and expedite processing the financial aid application by retrieving federal tax data and inputting it into FAFSA. UW-L's Financial Aid Office recommends using the IRS Data Retrieval option. To successfully use this option, applicants must have a federal tax return filed with the IRS, have a valid Social Security Number, a U.S. Department of Education Personal Identification Number (PIN), and have an unchanged marital status since Dec. 31, 2011. When completing the tax information on the FAFSA, indicate “Already Filed” and select the IRS Data Retrieval option. Applicants who choose not to use the IRS Data Retrieval process may have their applications selected for verification and if so, will be asked to provide a tax return transcript that must be obtained from the IRS. A copy of the tax return is no longer sufficient for verification documentation. Students are encouraged to file as early as possible. UW-L has a priority date of Thursday, March 15, for processing financial aid to ensure consideration for funds for all programs. Students who wish to be considered for aid for the summer, must also complete a 2012 Summer Application which is available at www.uwlax.edu/finaid/forms.html. Financial Aid Award Letters are not mailed to students, but will be available online. During the summer, students with complete financial aid files will receive an email at their campus email address instructing them to access their award letter online at their WINGS Student Center. Students should follow the instructions for accepting their award letter. Parents and students should always be wary of any unsolicited mail requesting payment for processing the FAFSA or for processing an application for merit or need based aid including scholarships. There is no charge to file the FAFSA or any other financial aid application. For more information, contact the UW-L Financial Aid Office at finaid@uwlax.edu.Academic regalia sale through April 9
