English colloquium presentation is 'Be Mine: Loving Selves in Romeo + Juliet'

Artwork for event. Natalie Eschenbaum, English, will present "Be Mine: Loving Selves in Romeo + Juliet" from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in 113 Wimberly Hall. Baz Luhrmann's film William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) links the story of the star-crossed lovers to Ovid’s tale of “Narcissus and Echo” from the "Metamorphoses." Luhrmann translates the play’s classical references into visual images; he uses mirrors and reflections, through glass and water, to suggest that Romeo and Juliet’s love for one another is very similar to narcissistic love of the self. Eschenbaum offers a reading that ultimately begins and ends with the possibility of love that transcends the mirroring of a simply-thought and simply-structured narcissism and considers the problem inherent in linking the self to an “other” in relationships. The event is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, email english@uwlax.edu or call 608.785.8295.

Trans* Preferred Name and Pronoun Implementation Team readying to create new policy

Task force seeks input by Feb. 16. UW-La Crosse is joining other campuses across the nation to adopt Trans* inclusive practices, such as preferred name and pronoun usage. The use of their legal name could "out" a trans* individual leaving them feeling unsafe and exposed. These actions do not reflect UW-L's Family Values. More details including a survey.

According to Nieca Goldberg, medical director of New York University’s Women’s Heart Program, more than half of heart disease is preventable through simple lifestyle changes. Follow these steps for a strong, healthy heart:
  • Your diet should consist of nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy, poultry, fish and nuts. Limit sugary foods and beverages as much as possible. Excess sugar consumption in particular can significantly increase your risk of cardiovascular disease. According to a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, those who got 17 to 21 percent of calories from added sugar had a 38 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease compared to those who consumed 8 percent of their calories from added sugar. Also limit the amount of trans fat and sodium that you eat by making the majority of your meals at home.
  • The American Heart Association recommends a total of 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five times a week to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. Those 30 minutes of physical activity can be spread out into 10 minute intervals. Also, if you work a desk job, taking time to get up and walk every few hours can be beneficial.
  • More research is needed to determine how stress contributes to heart disease. However, the American Heart Association suggests that stress may affect behaviors and factors that increase heart risk such as high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, smoking, physical inactivity and overeating. Ways to decrease stress include but are not limited to exercising, maintaining a positive attitude, not smoking and enjoying a healthy, portion-controlled diet.
You can learn more about ways to keep your heart healthy Friday, Feb. 13, and Friday, Feb. 27, in the Recreational Eagle Center. Materials from the American Heart Association as well as a poster displays pertaining to added sugars in the diet will be available for students and staff to view from 1-3 p.m.

Finding information on Environmental Topics

Murphy Library has a variety of resources related to the environment and environmental science. These resources come in many forms — from streaming video to online databases to print-based encyclopedias — and cover topics as varied as the science of climate change to perceptions of environmental sciences throughout history.

Some of the resources available through Murphy Library include:

  • The Subject Guide for Environmental Studies, which includes links to databases, periodicals, print and online books, and more.

  • Environment Complete (EBSCOhost), which includes articles from nearly 2,000 domestic and international journals on environmental studies as related to agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy use and renewable energy, natural resources, marine and freshwater science, geography, pollution and waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning and more.

  • Streaming video, such as Films on Demand’s Environmental Sciences streaming video collection, which allows people to stream educational videos by major documentary producers to desktops, tablets, phones and into classrooms.

  • Print and Online Books, such as the online 2014 Encyclopedia of Environmental Change published by SAGE;  the 2014 book Rachel Carson and her sisters: extraordinary women who have shaped America's environment; and many more that can be found through Search@UW using searches such as this one: publications between 2013 - 2015 for: climate change AND ethics

  • GreenFILE (EBSCOhost), which covers all aspects of human impact on the environment. Includes citations for scholarly, government, and popular articles in areas of agriculture, education, law, health, and technology.

Wisconsin in the Chronicle of Higher Education

Recent political events have resulted in articles about higher education in Wisconsin throughout the national media. One publication of particular interest to people at UW-L is the Chronicle of Higher Education, which is freely available to the UW-L campus community through a license provided by Murphy Library. To view locked content in the Chronicle of Higher Education while on campus, go to the Chronicle website at http://chronicle.com, which should recognize connections coming from UW-L and allow unrestricted access. To view locked content in the Chronicle of Higher Education while off campus, create an account with the Chronicle using your UW-L email. This process is different than when connecting to other databases from off campus. You can also install an app on your tablet or smartphone and create an account. For more information and signup/installation instructions, visit the library home page or the library news blog at http://librarynews.uwlax.edu/chronicle/.
