It’s estimated that 22 veterans a day commit suicide, according to a report from the Department of Veterans Affairs released in 2013. UW-L veteran student Donleigh Gaunky plans to add context to that statistic when he takes the stage as one of five presentations in UW-L’s second annual TEDxUWLaCrosse event from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 29, at Annett Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. Monday, Jan. 19, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration.
The celebration with featured speaker Ruby Bridges, the first African-American student to desegregate William Frantz Public School in New Orleans, begins at
7 p.m. in Viterbo University's Fine Arts Center Main Theatre, 929 Jackson St.
The event includes music performed by Viterbo University's music department, Praise Dance from the Prodigy of Life Ministries and the presentation of the MLK Leadership Award.

Jan. 19 luncheon to be held in Cargill Room at the Waterfront Restaurant
The La Crosse Public Education Foundation 2015 Grant Award Luncheon will be held Jan. 19 in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. It is scheduled from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Cargill Room at the Waterfront Restaurant, 328 Front St.
The event will honor the 2014-15 grant recipients and Bremer Bank, corporate partner in education. Ann Fowler is the Distinguished Service Award recipient and Steve Michaels is the Leadership Award recipient. Jennifer Livingston, WKBT, will emcee the event. District Advancement Via Individual Determination Coordinator Jeff Fleig will lead a presentation on the AVID program in the school district of La Crosse. The program teaches students to be critical thinkers and boosts reading, writing, inquiry and organization skills.

Colleen E. Hayes, UW-Madison Professor of Biochemistry, will present “Vitamin D and Multiple Sclerosis: Animal Modeling of Gene-Environment Interactions” at the La Crosse Bioresearch Forum
Thursday, Jan. 15. The presentation runs
from
12:15-1 p.m. in the Rasmus Center, Gundersen Health System.
The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the
Green ramp or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

The randomly-drawn winner of the Wyatt Bicycle customized by Bikes Limited is Quinton Taylor. The winners of the set of lights, helmet and lock from Bikes Limited are Bailey Benedict, Amy Cooper and Ryan Gittins. Results from the survey will help UW-L apply for recognition from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education STARS campus sustainability program; the League of American Bicyclists "Bike Friendly University" program, and also inform future alternative transportation planning on the UW-L campus.
