An “Enjoy a Taste of China” luncheon will immediately follow the Chancellor’s Address Wednesday, Jan. 23.

The All-University Spring Address is from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Graff Hall Main Auditorium. Refreshments are available at 10 a.m. Download a Luncheon form pdf and return it with payment to Tricia Aleckson, 212 Cartwright Center, 1725 State St., La Crosse, Wis., by no later than 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Student’s research explores stories from homeless

Sadie Tennessen Sadie Tennessen’s student research cuts through stereotypes and focuses on real stories. After spending 120 hours at The Salvation Army, sitting and talking with homeless families, the recent UW-L graduate discovered the power of narrative for those without a home. Read more >.

NY saxophonist Dave Pietro to perform

New York City saxophonist Dave Pietro and his group, Embrace, are the guest artists for this year’s UW-La Crosse Jazz Festival. They will join the UW-L Jazz Ensemble I along with the tri-state’s top high school groups in concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Benefit Jan. 26 for UW-L alum, wounded warrior

UW-L’s Political Science Department gave Jason a quilt during his visit to UW-L in November. The woman who made the quilt knew of Jason’s story and told her husband, a Vietnam veteran. He stitched the final touches on the quilt — writing the words "thank you" all over it. Church, ’11, stood up on new legs to accept the purple heart Nov. 10 at Roger Harring Stadium as his university family watched from the stands. Read more >

Top magician to perform at UW-La Crosse

One of the country’s top-rated magicians, Joseph Tran, is coming to UW-La Crosse. Tran will perform tricks and illusions, while keeping the audience laughing, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center–Gunning Addition. As a youngster, Tran’s love for magic began with a deck of cards and a library book. His love for magic has led him all over the country. Read more >

Take part in Jeans Day Friday, Jan. 25

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in the monthly “Jeans Day” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive our donations. In return for a $1 (suggested donation) UW-L employees may wear jeans to work Friday, Jan. 25. You may contribute even if you don’t wear jeans. In December UW-L raised $61. The charities receiving the January contributions are: La Crosse Youth Symphony – This organization provides a unique opportunity for youth to develop and showcase their artistry in the symphonic tradition and the enhance their lives and the cultural environment of the communities we serve. Children’s Miracle Network – They provide services to families whose child needs medical care.  They provide transportation funding, respite, specialized equipment, etc.  They also provide funding to community resources that help children. Drop $1 donations off with one of the following building contacts:

ATP artwork. Awareness through Performance: Privilege Unplugged VII set for Jan. 27

UW-L's  Awareness through Performance (ATP) spring 2013 production, Privilege Unplugged VII, is set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, with a repeat performance at 7 p.m. in Graff Main Hall Auditorium.
ATP: Privilege Unplugged VII showcases the passions, stories and perspectives of UW-L student leaders who want to create awareness of privilege and oppression. If you miss the Jan. 27 performances, be sure to save the date for the encore performance at 7 p.m.  Monday, March 4. Shows are free and open to the public. Exercise at the REC free Jan. 28-Feb. 1

Kick your New Year's resolution into action by working out at the Recreational Eagle Center during "Free Week."  Check out a variety of exercise opportunities and participate in a fitness class.  See the Rec Sports website to learn more about memberships and services available at the REC.  Bring your current UW-L ID (required) and stop by the REC Information Counter upon arrival to sign in. Babich retirement reception set for Jan. 30

A retirement reception for Anne Babich will be held from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, in the Gathering Place at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Babich is retiring after working at UW-L 17 years. Refreshments will be served.

Band of Horses is featured band at Feb. 1 Album Encounters

The first Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show for the spring semester features Band of Horses' “Cease to Begin” at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $4. Diversity Dialogues to be held Feb. 6

The fourth annual Diversity Dialogues will be held from 8:50 a.m.-3:10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Cartwright Center.  In addition to our keynote speaker, Mr. Marc Elliott, Diversity Dialogues will host The  traveling–photo exhibit by Peta Owens-Liston, “What I Thought I Saw,” will be on display from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuedsay, Feb. 5, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Passport to Technology 7 slated for Feb. 1

Academic Technology Services/ITS will host Passport to Technology 7 from 12:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in Wing Technology Center. Refreshments will be provided. Keynote speakers Bob Hoar, Jennifer Kosiak and Maggie McHugh will discuss the process they used to develop Math Readiness Math MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) at 12:30 p.m. in 102 Wing Technology Center. The program was funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Concurrent 35-minute technology sessions will follow the keynote presentation. Topics include YouSeeU, Kaltura, online presentation tools, Prezi, SMARTSync, library tech tools, PDF publishing and more. Virginia Crank, English, had her article "From High School to College: Developing Writing Skills in the Disciplines" published in The WAC Journal, volume 23.
Tom Kernozek, Health Professions, Physical Therapy Program; along with Hsien-Te Peng, Chinese Cultural University, Taipei; and Chen-Yi Song, National Taiwan University, Taipei; published "Muscle Activation of Vastus Medialis Obliquus and Vastus Lateralis During a Dynamic Leg Press Exercise With and Without Isometric Hip Ddduction" in Physical Therapy in Sport, (2013), volume 14, pp. 44-49.
James Longhurst, History, presentd "The Bike in the City: A History of the Current Conflict over Urban Cycling," by invitation at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, Jan. 17. The presentation was part of the "Rolling Seminar" year-long series of speakers on the McMaster campus presenting viewpoints on current cycling culture and the environmental and political history that informs understanding.

 Exam opportunity for classified position

Custodial Services is currently filling a full-time Custodian Lead vacancy. Starting pay is $11.949 per hour or an increase of $ 0.665. Hours are Sunday-Thursday, 10:30 p.m.–7 a.m. (subject to change). To be eligible you must have an active Custodian Lead civil service exam score.  The next exam date is Saturday, Feb.9. Thanks artwork. Thank you for the support, cards, gifts, thoughts and prayers for our grandson, Finnegan.
