Council for Higher Education Accreditation cites outstanding processes for assessing student learning

UW-La Crosse business students can rest assured they have the right business plan for college and their career. The UW-L College of Business Administration is the first university or college in the state — and only the second business school in the nation — to receive the Council for Higher Education Accreditation Award for Outstanding Institutional Practice in Student Learning Outcomes. The award recognizes the university’s college “for its use of outcomes assessment to improve student learning in its undergraduate program, using a faculty-driven team that directs a strong assessment culture.”  Read more >

More than 1,000 have signed up for math refresher course

An 11-year-old math whiz who wants to be more challenged. A school bus driver hoping to help riders with their math. An 83-year-old checking off a bucket-list item. These are just three of the more than 1,000 people who will start class through a unique online course at UW-La Crosse Monday, Jan. 28, when students head back to campus for the spring semester. Read more >

UW-L faculty to exhibit work

Gallery show runs Feb. 1-20

UW-La Crosse art faculty will show their work in an upcoming art exhibition in the University Art Gallery. The triennial UW-L Faculty Exhibition will feature recent work and research projects. The exhibit opens with a reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the gallery, located on the first floor of the Center for the Arts. The show runs through Wednesday, Feb. 20. Read more >

Nationally known speaker Marc Elliot speaks on “What Makes You Tic” Wednesday, Feb. 6, on campus. Internationally known speaker Marc Elliot will describe a childhood of struggle growing up as a kid diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome. Read more >.

Alpha Phi Sorority recruitment events begin with "Warm Up with Alpha Phi" at 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Other upcoming events include:
  • "Move Your Phi't — Zumba with the Alpha Phis" — Monday, Feb. 4, in the Recreational Eagle Center Multipurpose Room
  • "Alpha Phi Values" — Wednesday, Feb. 6, in 337 Cartwright Center
  • "Preference Night Invite Only" — Tuesday, Feb. 12, in the Ward Room

Brown Bag Lunch discussion set for Feb. 1 Colin Burns-Gilbert, Residence Life, will present “White Privilege: Vulnerability and Shame” at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. The Feb. 1 discussion is the first in the year-long “Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts," hosted by UW-L's Campus Climate Office Brown bag lunch, apple and sandwich. Join the first Friday of the month conversations discussing contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last less than 45 minutes. Discussions follow. Film Series Events are presented and facilitated by friends and colleagues of Campus Climate and are free and open to everyone. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and are welcome to come late or leave early. Our Story artwork. History of Palestinian people is topic of Feb. 5 photo exhibit

Schedule a class tour now

The photo exhibit "Our Story: The Palestinians" will be on campus from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
In one hour this free exhibit leads viewers through the history of Palestinian people starting in pre-1948 Palestine, through the wars of 1948 and 1967, to the uprising of the Intifada, into the military occupation, and to the present struggle for peace and justice. Money tree. Small grants and Dobrunz Travel Award applications are due March 27 The deadline to apply for UW-L Foundation Small Grants and Dobrunz Travel Awards is Wednesday, March 27. Funds for instruction, research and public service projects are available for July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014 through a UW-L Foundation Small Grant. Members of the university community may apply for a small grant for a wide variety of projects. Grant information, application forms and a list of awards for the previous funding cycle are available online at www.uwlax.edu/grants/funding_sources/UWF_FSG.htm. Dobrunz Travel Awards financially support travel for non-tenured faculty and instructional academic staff members to participate in national conferences. Awards up to $1,000 go toward registration, travel and housing costs only. To be eligible, the conference in the application must occur between July 1, 2013, and June 30, 2014. In the News artwork. "University employees brace for changes," WKBT-TV, Jan. 22. Employees at state universities in Wisconsin are bracing for some changes to how their jobs are classified. As part of the Act 10 reforms, the "classified staff" status will be dissolved. That impacts both union and non-union jobs. Some examples of classified staff include janitors and secretaries. Those impacted will be moved into "academic staff" status ... The class starts Monday, designed to help high school students transition to college-level math. Still, registrants of all ages, from countries as far flung as Japan and the Ukraine, have signed up for UW-L's first "Massive Online Open Course"... "UW-L student documents stories of homeless," La Crosse Tribune, Jan. 25. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student Sadie Tennessen wanted to learn more about homelessness, but all she found were statistics...So Tennessen spent much of her final semester at the Salvation Army. Her final project for her communications degree examined  personal stories of La Crosse's homeless ... Thanks artwork.
