Spring SSP session to be held Tuesday evenings from Jan. 29-May 7

UW-L's spring session Self-Sufficiency Program runs from Tuesday, Jan. 29, through May 7. Classes are held from 6-8 p.m. Tuesdays and selected Wednesdays for math and writing sessions. Classes are held in UW-L's Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department, Centennial Hall. for all sessions. SSP is a semester-long college readiness/exploration program for low-income, single parents. Free childcare is provided. Find out more about the program at www.uwlax.edu/its/ats/borvid/ssp/index.html. Chavalas, History, had the article "Syria (Pre-Roman)" published online in Wiley-Blackwell's Encyclopedia of Ancient History, 13 vols., eds., Roger Bagnall, Kai Brodersen, Craige Champion, Andrew Erskine, Sabine Hübner (Oxford: Wiley-Blackwell, 2012). Chavalas reviewed "Thomas A. Blackson, Ancient Greek Philosophy: From the Presocratics to the Hellenistic Philosophers" (Chichester, UK: Wiley-Blackwell, 2011) for the Near East Archaeological Society Bulletin 57 (2012) pp. 53-4. John Porcari, Exercise and Sport Science, had the "Which Exercises are Best for You" published in the February issue of Bottom Line Health (Vol. 27, No. 2, pages 11-12). Brad Quarberg, University Communications, received the 2012 CASE V Distinguished Service Award, given annually to the district’s top volunteer. CASE is education’s leading resource for knowledge, standards, advocacy and training in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing and related activities. Quarberg received the award during the CASE V & VI Better Together Conference on Dec. 11 in Chicago. UW-L Recreation Management and Therapeutic Recreation students who took the  the national examination for first-time candidates on National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification received a 94.9 percent pass rate. The national passing rate is 73.6 percent.
