McNair summer research presentations to be held Aug. 1

Students in the McNair Scholars Program will present their research from noon-2:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in 337 Cartwright Center. A lunch will be served. For a list of presenters and topics see mcnai-research-2013. The McNair Scholars Program prepares low income and underrepresented students for graduate school.

Blood drive set for Aug. 7

The Red Cross Blood is having a blood drive from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, in 2064 Health Science Center. To sign up in advance, add your name to sign-up sheets in various campus departments or email Michael Lazzari at mlazzari@uwlax.edu. Walk-ins are welcome.

YWCA Tribute to Outstanding Women Award nominees sought

Nominations due Aug. 12

UW-L’s Organization of Campus Women Nominating Committee is accepting nominations for the 2013 YWCA of the Coulee Region Tribute to Outstanding Woman award.

The award recognizes and honors women from the Coulee Region who have demonstrated qualities of outstanding leadership and excellence in their professional and personal endeavors in accordance with the mission of the YWCA.

Nominated women should reflect YWCA’s mission: “YWCA of the Coulee Region is dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women.” The award criteria changed in 2009 to include more demonstrated involvement in the assistance in the elimination or reduction of racism. Nominees must be associated with UW-L as faculty, academic or classified staff or students. No self-nominations will be accepted.

Awards will honor women’s contributions in the following areas: non-profit, business/professions, health, education, activist, volunteer, trail blazer, Young Woman of Tomorrow (college or high school student) and “other” a category, which may include community development or sports, for example.

Email nominations, along with a brief statement indicating why they are being nominated, by Monday, Aug. 12, to Debra Hoeth at dhoeth@uwlax.edu.

 Roger Haro, River Studies Center, published "Burrowing dragonfly larvae as biosentinels of methylmercury in freshwater food webs," in Environmental Science and Technology, a journal of the American Chemical Society.       WisPolitics.com: UW-La Crosse online course wins national award for collaboration The 2013 Desire2Excel award is given to individuals, groups or organizations that display exemplary ingenuity, creativity and collaboration in empowering students to achieve their academic goals. "Trane employs dozens of UW-L students," WXOW-TV, July 19. In a rocky job market, Trane has been a steadfast employer of UW-La Crosse students. The company is celebrating its centennial this year and for the past 40, they've been offering internships to UW-L students in both business and science fields. (View video clip). "UW-La Crosse campus police relocate," WXOW-TV, July 19. After 25 years, the UW-La Crosse campus police have a new facility. The new building has been in the works for more than four years. It's adjacent to the old location, which will be torn down this year and become a new student center. (View video clip). "UW-La Crosse hosts sustainability conference," WKBT, July 22 Community leaders working on sustainability issues came together at the UW-La Crosse for the bi-annual sustainability conference.
