Visit from chancellor of women's university in Sudan strengthens partnership with UW-L
Badri Gasim, the chancellor of a private university for women in Sudan, was on campus June 4-6 to talk with various UW-L leaders and community members about strengthening relationships and educational opportunities for women. UW-L signed a Memorandum of Understanding in January with the Ahfad University for Women (AUW) to collaborate on possible exchange and degree programs at the institutions to improve the role of women in Sudan through education. Sudan was ranked 85 out of 86 in the 2012 Social Institutions and Gender Index. The index measures underlying discrimination against women for more than 100 countries. "This is a great opportunity for our two institutions to benefit from this partnership," says Jay Lokken, UW-L's director of the Office of International Education. "Gasim's visit has helped to pave the way for women from Sudan to broaden their international experience by studying at UW-L." AUW embraces a combination of academic courses, on-the-job training, individual research and community extension activities to prepare women to become change agents in their families and communities and to assume leadership positions in society. The university enrolls more than 5,000 students and offers a five-year bachelor's degree in six undergraduate schools and a master's degree in two areas.

Sign up by June 15 to lead Campus Climate Brown Bag Lunch Film Series discussions in 2012-13
The Campus Climate Office staff piloted a brown bag lunch film and discussion series last semester to engage the UW-L community in discussions about contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Because of the interest and enthusiasm for series the staff is considering a film series for the academic year of 2012-13. If interested in facilitating a film showing and discussion, fill out the Qualtrics survey at https://uwlacrosse.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_ebuxsjkHAofikjG by Friday, June 15, regarding your availability and topic of interest. Each 1-1/2 hour event typically starts with a brief introduction of the featured topic, followed by a film showing — such as TED Talks, YouTube clips, 30 Days episodes — and ends with a discussion. Attendees bring their lunch and come and go as they please. The office of Campus Climate has made all venue reservations and will promote the film series with campus-wide publicity. For more information contact Carrie Bero at cbero@uwlax.edu.

OCW spearheads on-campus granola bar food drive for Feed the Kids program
When school is out for the summer school lunch programs close down and many children in the community go hungry or fill up on non-nutritional food.
The Salvation Army's Feed the Kids volunteers assemble sack lunches and deliver them to children in neighborhoods and to those in summer programs. The lunch is sometimes the only meal these children will get each day.
To help, UW-L's Organization of Campus Women is collecting granola bars for the lunches Monday, June 18, through Friday, June 29. To donate, drop off granola bars at any of these locations:
- 212 Cartwright Center
- 227 Graff Main Hall
- 1120 Centennial Hall
- Murphy Library Circulation Area

OCW Book Club summer read is Stephen King's '11/22/63'
If you could change history, would you? Should you?
Stephen King explores this concept in "11/22/63." King tells the story of a small-town teacher who goes back in time to stop one of the watershed events of American history — the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
UW-L's Organization of Campus Women Book Club will discuss the book at noon Thursday, July 19, in Murphy's Mug. Get a head start on reading the 849-page book so you can join the discussion. Participation is open to all faculty, staff and students.
