‘Jeans Day’ is the last Friday of every month

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participates in “Jeans Day” each month. Jeans Day is sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. In return for a $1 suggested donation, UW-L faculty and staff have the opportunity to wear jeans rather than their usual attire. One or two local, non-profit charities or organizations are designated each month to receive the Jeans Day donations. Jeans Day is a wonderful excuse to dress casual this Friday, June 27. Just locate the building contact person on the list below, contribute the suggested $1, and collect a Jeans Day sticker. It is not necessary to wear jeans to participate. This is a great way to unite the UW-L campus in supporting local, non-profit organizations in the Greater La Crosse area. In May, the campus raised $56. The charities receiving the June contributions are United Fund For The Arts and Pump House Regional Arts Center. Let’s show how generous we can be! Building Contacts:

Birthday celebration for Carl Wimberly June 27

A 90th birthday celebration for Carl Wimberly, retired UW-L vice chancellor, will be from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, June 27, at the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Cake and refreshments will be served. Wimberly served UW-L for 40 years as a professor, dean and vice chancellor. He was recognized by renaming North Hall in his honor in June 2000. The birthday celebration is hosted by his family, the UW-L Alumni Association and the UW-L Foundation.

Laurie Magnusson retirement celebration July 2

Laurie Magnusson will retire after nearly 29 years of service at UW-L from her final post in the School of Education office. Friends and colleagues are invited to help celebrate her retirement at a reception from 3-4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 2, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center. Cake and punch will be served. Campus Kudos artwork. Mark W. Chavalas, History, spoke on “Abraham and Camels” for the 'Abri Christian Fellowship June 13, in Rochester, Minnesota. Catherine Lavallée-Welch, Murphy Library, attended the 2014 CLIR/EDUCAUSE Leading Change Institute June 1-6, in Washington, D.C. She then attended the Special Libraries Association (SLA) Annual Conference June 7-11, in Vancouver, B.C. At the conference, she was named a Fellow of SLA and she received the Grieg Aspnes Outstanding Member Award from the Information Technology Division. She presented at two sessions, "Working Across Cultures" and the "Rising Stars and Fellows Roundtable" with other association awardees. Cecilia G. Manrique, Political Science and Public Administration, had her peer-reviewed review of the article “SmartPiggy: a piggy bank that talks to your smartphone” by T. Stockinger et. al., published in the May 16, 2014 issue of Computing Reviews. Matthew A.M. Thomas, Educational Studies, published “Dissecting the teacher monolith: Experiences of beginning basic school teachers in Zambia” in the International Journal of Educational Development. This article explores the uniqueness of beginning teacher experiences in the global South and examines critically the implications of the ‘Education for All’ movement for this particular sub-group of the teaching population. A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "Wisconsin college campuses increasingly turn to car sharing," Wisconsin Public Radio, June 11. More universities in Wisconsin are partnering up with car share companies to try to keep more cars off campus. At University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, for example, some students recently proposed establishing a car share program on campus to address the lack of parking spaces... "State OKs UW-L water chiller," La Crosse Tribune, June 14. ... handle future air conditioning needs at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. ... Scott Walker, signed off on the UW-L project and other UW building ... "Future UW-L freshmen learn about drinking dangers, resources," The Courier Life News, June 14. "No, I do not believe so, but there is that theory out there,” Bertrand said to a crowd of incoming freshmen at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. "Wisconsin college campuses increasingly turn to car sharing," Sawyer County Record, June 16. At University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, for example, some students recently proposed establishing a car share program on campus to address the lack ... The school removed satellite dishes Friday that date back to the 1980s, when they were used to downlink movie files to campus... UW-L is working with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to provide a car share program... Roll-out of new campus calendar

This summer you will start to notice changes to the campus calendar, sometimes referred to as the master calendar. Important dates to note:
  • June 27 - noon: Last day to submit events in the current system - information from the old system WILL be imported into the new system.
  • July 1: Launch of new calendar.
  • July 14: New calendar event submission form becomes available.
  • August 4: Event information becomes more readily visible as it gets incorporated within UW-L webpages.
NOTE: There will not be a publicly accessible method for submitting events to the calendar from June 27 - July 14. Where possible, submit event information before June 27 or after July 14. Jon Borgen

Jon Borgen, maintenance mechanic in University Centers, died June 9, 2014. Borgen worked at UW-L for 29 years, with his final 15 years working in University Centers. Borgen’s colleagues in University Centers say he had a  "can do" attitude in his work and always seemed to be smiling when he was helping others. He will be sorely missed for his positive attitude and smile, as well as his knowledge and abilities in equipment repair. Read the obituary on the La Crosse Tribune Website.

Hong Rost

Funeral services for Hong Rost, assistant director of International Education at UW-L from 1995 to 2010, be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Menomonie, Wisconsin. Hong was a graduate of UW-L’s Student Affairs Administration Program and currently served as the Director of International Education at UW-Stout. Read the full obituary.
