UW-L students generating buzz, donations for childhood cancer research

St. Baldrick's charity Last year UW-L’s St. Baldrick’s event raised $30,000 for childhood cancer research after more than 100 people turned out to have their heads shaved. This year the organizing group from Coate Hall is looking to generate the same buzz. The 8th annual St. Baldrick’s event will be from noon-4 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Recreational Eagle Center. LIVEMAROON special event details positivity in the workplace

It’s hard to stay positive in today’s negative world, yet we know being in a state of negativity and stress can lead to health issues. What if there were simple manageable strategies that could flip the switch from negativity to positivity? A session at UW-L will cover the art and science of Law of Attraction, and how to apply it to your health and life for optimal success. Carol Ebert, a Certified Wellness Practitioner and a Certified Wellness Coach and Trainer, will lead “Attracting positivity into the workplace” from 2-3 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in Graff Main Hall Auditorium. Those attending will discover how to:
  •  change negativity into a positive experience.
  •  create a personal desire statement and manifest it.
  • create a plan to allow positive experiences into work and life.

'Stories we live — Stories we tell' is theme of Creative Imperatives festival

Creative Imperatives artwork.The School of Arts and Communication festival running through Wednesday, March 4, on campus is about showcasing campus creative talent, as well as the work of distinguished guests. "Stories We Live – Stories We Tell" explores storytelling as a way to share creative work and as an avenue to explore life and inspiration. The second annual Creative Imperatives festival offers 40 events — twice as many as last year — including workshops, performances, exhibits and presentations. All events are free and open to the public. Some of the guest speakers includes Storyteller Kevin Kling, Pulitzer-Prize-nominated Composer Chen Yi, Artist Amaryllis Dejesus Moleski, and Performer Robert Rosen. Each guest will be featured in a public event, as well as provide special instruction to students. Another highlight is Tales and Tunes. Jazz faculty and music students will trade sets with creative writers from the Department of English in an evening showcasing improvisation and original work at 8 p.m Tuesday, March 3, at The Root Note.

New video from UW Libraries features Provost Macpherson,Professor Cooper

The Council of University of Wisconsin Libraries (CUWL) has released a video highlighting the importance of UW-System funding for information research tools. The video, "Investing in knowledge, investing in Wisconsin," was created to help Wisconsin decision makers understand the direct relationship between the information resources typically supplied by libraries and the outcomes of cutting-edge research.
Several UW-L personnel were involved in the video creation, including Provost Heidi Macpherson, who narrates the video, Library Director Catherine Lavallée-Welch, CATL Director William Cerbin, and Educational Multimedia Developers Jeff Kerkman and Xingxing Lin. The video features several UW System researchers, including UW-L Professor Scott Cooper as he describes the importance of online access to journals. It also shows UW-L students conducting and reporting on research activities.
The video is part of an awareness-raising campaign directed toward the Board of Regents, the UW System administration and government leaders. Lavallée-Welch encourages people to share the video wherever possible to help others understand the importance of continued funding for critical information research resources. Healthy Cooking on a Budget is planned for March 3

UW-L's It Make$ Cents! Money Management Team is sponsoring "Healthy Cooking on a Budget," a cooking demonstration by Katie Callahan, Sodexo's registered dietitian, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, in Reuter Hall kitchen. Taste test delicious foods while learning how to save money on food and eat healthier. Sign up in 2013 Centennial Hall; only 25 seats available.

'Credit Declassified' set for March 4

Uncover some of the best-kept secrets of earning college credit outside of the traditional classroom in "Credit Declassified" from 7:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in 1142 Centennial Hall. Learn how to save time and money taking credits in different ways. Learn about credit-by-exam, UW-Colleges Online, UW-Independent Learning, and more.

When it comes to accepting job offers, be sure to know what each company has to offer when it comes to benefits and insurance. Learn more at "Life After College: Job Benefits and Insurance" from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in 2214 Centennial Hall. Earn two IMC! incentive points for attending. An evening with spoken word artist Staceyann Chin set for March 4

Staceyann Chin, a full-time spoken word artist, is the guest speaker at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The Jamaican national who lives in New York City, has been an “out poet and political activist” since 1998. Chin has performed at the Nuyorican Poets' Cafe, a poet's haven in Manhattan; in one-woman shows Off- Broadway; in Julie Taymor’s "Across the Universe;" and in both the stage and film versions of Howard Zinn’s "Voices of a People's History of the United States." She also starred in the Tony-nominated, Russell Simmons' "Def Poetry Jam" on Broadway. Chin credits her long list of accomplishments to her grandmother's hard-working history and the pain of her mother's absence. The free presentation is sponsored by the Pride Center; Rainbow Unity; and the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department.

'Promises' to be shown, discussed March 5

Promises artwork. The film "Promises" in the History of Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Series takes an alternative look at the Jewish-Palestinian conflict. It will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 5, in 2200 Centennial Hall. Several Jewish and Palestinian children are followed in the film for three years and put in touch with each other.
The film series is sponsored by the departments of History; Communication Studies; English; Ethnic and Racial Studies; Psychology; Political Science and Public Administration; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Sociology/Archaeology; Art; Modern Languages; and the Office of International Education.

The Grateful Dead's 'Live Dead' to be featured at the March 6 Album Encounters; 'Chasing the ghost particle — searching for neutrinos‘ is March Public Program

The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature the Grateful Dead's "Live Dead" at 8 p.m. Friday, March 6, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for March is "Chasing the ghost particle — searching for neutrinos." The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays, March 7, 14. 21, and 28Admission is $3 for students, seniors and children, and $5 for others. Chancellor to hold open forum March 10

In addition to updates on the latest UW System news from Madison, Gow will answer questions and address other topics of interest. He has granted one hour release time to attend this event. Work with supervisors to ensure office coverage.

Deadline to nominate Classified Staff for new excellence award is April 3

Faculty, academic and classified staff, administrators and students are encouraged to nominate classified staff with exemplary experience for UW-L's first Classified Staff Award for Excellence. Self-nominations are also sought. Nominations may come from a college, department or division unit. UW-L classified employees who have a minimum 75 percent appointment and have been employed for a minimum of 12 months may be nominated. Nominate staff who have gone above and beyond in the following categories:
  • performance excellence
  • personal interaction
  • initiative and creativity
  • support of the university and its mission
The recipient will receive an $800 honorarium for professional development and a UW-L recognition plaque. Nominations and optional letters of support are due to the selection committee no later than 11:59 p.m. Friday, April 3. The award recipient will be recognized at the Thursday, July 16, Classified Excellence Breakfast and the Chancellor’s Fall Convocation Ceremony in August.

Ideadvance seed fund grants available for campus entrepreneurs

UW System and Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. launched a $2 million Ideadvance seed fund to support faculty, staff and student entrepreneurs to commercialize high potential, innovative ideas from across all disciplines on campus. Whether the idea is or is not related to work on campus, the Ideadvance seed fund offers up to $75,000 in competitive grants and a structured program to help entrepreneurs evaluate strategic paths to market. The next deadline is Friday, April 24, for a cohort that begins in June. It's a perfect fit for students and busy faculty who want to leverage the summer session to evaluate an idea, notes Marie Rieber, Small Business Development Center. Funded projects have included ideas to improve language learning, create safer sleeping environments for newborns, and test novel products for sports and leisure industries, as well as innovations in education, manufacturing, construction and biotechnology. The program's goal is to support entrepreneurs through every step of the process and help them identify ways to make the program work for them. Heating plant shutdown set for May 17-24

Mark your calendars for the heating plant shutdown dates for scheduled maintenance and repairs. It will be off line starting 6 p.m. Sunday, May 17, until 10 p.m. Sunday, May 24. During the shutdown there will be no steam distribution services available to any campus buildings. Subsequently, cage washers, autoclaves and other steam supplied equipment will be affected. Amaryllis DeJesus Moleski talks about her use of culturally “classed” materials to create visual and performative artwork that explores how society is programming the future in relationship to systems of marginalization. She will also share concerns with the futuristic femme myth as it applies to queer and of color communities.

  • 2015 High School Girls Preseason Soccer Camp is March 16-19. This camp will help high school girls prepare for their upcoming soccer season. To register, click here.
  • The 2015 Eagles Wrestling Club starts March 23. This camp will allow wrestlers in 7th-12th grade to receive individual instruction from UW-L coaching staff and athletes, learn advanced skills, and to compete at a higher level. For more info, click here.
  • Want to participate in a 3K or 5K run? The Coulee Chase 5K/3K is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 7. The course begins at Myrick Park Gun Shelter, goes through the marsh and through campus, and finishes at the gun shelter. This run promotes National Athletic Training Month. UW-L students win $1,000 in statewide healthcare case competition hosted by Wisconsin AHEC

National Nutrition Month: Bite into a healthy lifestyle

National Nutrition Month is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The main focus of the campaign is to educate the public to make informed food choices and to help develop sound eating and physical activity habits. The 2015 theme, “Bite into a healthy lifestyle,” encourages everyone to adopt an eating and physical activity plan that can improve overall health and reduce risk of chronic disease. Students and faculty can look forward to a variety of events in honor of this month-long celebration. Topics covered throughout the month include: healthy eating in the dining hall, portion control and a special “guess the grain” activity.
