Medieval romance in 'A Game of Thrones' is topic of March 28 presentation

English faculty member Rebekah Fowler will present "Sansa's Songs: Medieval Romance in A Game of Thrones" as part of the English Department's 2013-2014 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series. The presentation runs from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28, in 113 Wimberly Hall. The event is free and open to the public. Fowler will present how George R. R. Martin's use of the medieval romance genre in "A Game of Thrones," the first book of the "Song of Ice and Fires" series, problematizes the genre's idealized heritage by simultaneously developing engaging characters for whom readers root and expressing life's complications, particularly where life and politics intersect. Her presentation will explore how Martin's work demonstrates how medieval romance inadequately accounts for those complications while also proffering hopefulness for more positive, idealized and simplified solutions to those complications. According to Fowler, Martin seems to suggest that postmodernity — with all of its disruptions, discontinuities and gray areas — desires the romance with all of its magic and fictivity, but only if it can be repurposed to better reflect postmodernity's myriad truths. Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right!

There are many factors that go into what people choose to eat. But, most of the time, people eat what tastes good. That’s why this year’s National Nutrition Month theme is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” Food that is good for you does not have to be bland and tasteless. Eating healthy and enjoying your food are not mutually exclusive. Use fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low fat dairy as the base of your meals but use herbs, spices, vinegars, peppers and citrus juices to add lots of fat-free flavor. Sodexo’s Mindful program makes the healthy choice the delicious choice. Mindful offerings are big on flavor, low on calories (and fat, cholesterol and sodium). Look for the green apple to identify Mindful choices. There is a new Mindful offering every week at Cyclone Salads and Slice of Life in the Galley. There is also a Mindful special at 360 Degrees in Whitney Center every Wednesday night. Check out the board in Whitney Center for more ways to enjoy the taste of eating right.  — Sarah Nicklay, Dietitian In the News artwork.
