Knight errant or knight domestic? Quest for suitable social roles to be discussed at March 8 presentation

Rebekah Fowler, English, will present  "The Quest for Knightly Identity: Knight-Errant or Knight-Domestic?" from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, March 8, in 113 Wimberly Hall. Medieval romances are rife with tales of knight errantry, but what happens when a knight wants to replace a life of adventure and tournaments with one of domestic stability and defense of home and family? In this presentation, Fowler will examine how Chrétien de Troyes’ Yvain, ou le Chevalier au Lion represents the emergence of the "domestic knight" as an alternative knightly identity to the more common romance ideal of the knight errant. She will also discuss the social construction of masculine identity and the quest for suitable social — and individual — roles. The English Department’s 2012-13 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series presentation is free and open to the public. To arrange for disability accommodations, contact english@uwlax.edu or call 785.8295. UW-L prof sketches lives of accomplished artists with roots in La Crosse," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 24. (Retired UW-La Crosse English professor) Richard Boudreau hadn't heard of Alonzo Hauser until a couple of years ago, but the La Crosse-born sculptor inspired him to discover dozens of artists and entertainers with ties to the city... "'UW-La Crosse students to stage 'Spring Awakening'," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 24. "Spring Awakening." It sounds light and airy and pretty, doesn't it? Not so much. UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow says their employees haven't had a raise in 5 years which makes it harder to keep them ... "UW-L professor questions effectiveness of 'sin taxes'," La Crosse Tribune, Feb. 26. Adam Hoffer knows people who question so-called sin taxes can be stigmatized as "crazy radicals that don't know what they're talking about." But taxing booze, cigarettes and soft drinks isn't always a great idea, says the assistant professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse ... Anonymous University 'Confessions' Pages Springing Up, Wisconsin Public Radio Feb. 26 Facebook pages that encourage college students to anonymously divulge their deepest secrets are popping up on campuses across the country, including many UW schools.
