For a fourth year, UW-L is participating in RecycleMania, a national competition between colleges and universities to reduce waste. The competition runs through Saturday, March 31. Help UW-L recycle and win! Recycle paper, cardboard, plastics, glass, aluminum cans, tin cans and compostable materials. For a weekly update of UW-L results log in to RecyleMania Reports. Last year UW-L finished in first place among UW System schools competing in the category to determine which UW campus generated the least amount of waste per person per week. UW-L finished 133rd among 630 participating schools in the competition division measuring the success of their recycling and waste prevention efforts. In 2011, UW-L recovered 104,490 pounds of recyclable paper products, plastics (#1-7), glass and metal containers during the 10-week competition ending April 2. These results are comparable to 2010 results at 108,810 pounds and better than UW-L’s 2009 benchmark year during which UW-L collected 85,960 pounds of recyclables. Contributions moved UW-L’s cumulative recycling rate from 23.53 percent in 2009 to 29.74 percent in 2010 and 29.03 in 2011. Recycling is one component of increasing UW-L’s demonstrated commitment to environmental sustainability. Continue improving your recycling habits. Recycling is easy; simply place on-campus-generated recyclable materials into the labeled recycling containers within your building or in the dumpsters adjacent to your facility. For information on UW-L’s recycling program, methods and materials view the UW-L Recycling website.
