What’s Happening In Dining Services

— By Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day is March 11

Each March during National Nutrition Month®, a day is devoted to honor the work of Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs). This year, in honor of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day on Wednesday, March 11, a poster with biographies of the RDNs on campus will be displayed in the Whitney Center main dining room. RDNs, or RDs, are food and nutrition experts who have met the following criteria to earn the credential:
  • Completed a minimum of a bachelor’s degree at a university or college accredited or approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
  • Completed 1,200 hours of supervised practice through an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Internship, Coordinated Program in Dietetics or an Individualized Supervised Practice Pathway (ISPP).
  • Passed a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).
The main role of RDNs is to improve the overall nutritional status of Americans and people around the world. Over the past few years, the role of the RDN has expanded beyond the hospital and food service operations. RDNs also cooperate wellness programs, and work in community and public health settings, universities, research areas, sports teams and grocery stores.
