'Jeans Day' Friday, May 15Jeans Day artwork.

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participates in “Jeans Day” each month and is sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. In return for $1 (suggested donation), UW-L faculty and staff have the opportunity to wear jeans rather than usual business attire. Donations go to designated local, non-profit charities or organizations each month. The charities this month are UW-L Learning in Retirement and La Crosse Symphony Orchestra, Inc. Locate your building contact person on the list below, contribute your suggested $1, and collect your Jeans Day sticker. It is not necessary to wear jeans to participate. This is a great way to unite our campus in supporting local non-profit organizations in the Greater La Crosse area. In April, the campus raised more than $110. Let’s show the community how generous we can be. Building contacts:

Top 10 Tips for a healthy, happy lifestyle —

It can be easy to give in to the latest diet trend. Unfortunately, diets are usually quick fixes that are not sustainable. Here are some tips on ways to make small, gradual changes toward a healthy, happy lifestyle:
  • Focus on real foods. Fruits, vegetables, lean protein, and healthy fat all contain far less sugar, sodium, and trans-fat than any processed food item.
  • Use MyPlate as a guide. The USDA MyPlate is a good model to keep in mind when creating your plate in the dining hall.
  • Snack 2-3 times a day. Combine healthy fat (olive oil, peanut butter), protein (beef jerky, deli meat), and carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables, whole grains) for optimal blood sugar control.
  • Keep portions in check. It is easy to get out of hand with portions. Remember that a portion size of meat is the size of your palm and peanut butter and butter is the size of a ping-pong ball.
  • Take the focus off of calories and focus on QUALITY. Instead of wondering how many calories are in an item, think about what nutrients are in an item.
  • Sneak in some activity throughout the day. A little goes a long way. Combine strength exercises with cardio for about 20-30 minutes a day for a good metabolism boost.
  • Drink lots of water. Your body is made of 50-60% water. Drink 9-13 cups of water a day to keep your body functioning properly.
  • Get enough sleep. Believe it or not, nutrition and sleep do go hand in hand. The less sleep you get, the more likely you’ll crave food items higher in sugar and processed carbohydrates. These items ultimately can cause harm (more specifically inflammation) to the body.
  • Don’t stress the small stuff. Instead of resorting to food when stressed, go on a walk, do some journaling, or call a friend.
  • Enjoy your food. It’s meant to be savored.
