100 percent pass rate; athletic training students consistently earn high scores

All 14 seniors in UW-L’s athletic training program passed the Board of Certification Exam in April to be eligible to become future athletic trainers. This is the fourth straight year that UW-L’s program has had a 100 percent first-time pass rate — placing it consistently above the national pass rate. During this same time period, the national first-time pass rate for the exam was 75 percent. “This outcome is a direct measure of the quality of the academic preparation that students receive at UW-L,” says Mark Gibson, director,  Athletic Training Program and chair, Department of Exercise and Sport Science. “We are thankful that our students have excellent instruction outside of our athletic training courses as well as within. The university provides an optimal learning environment for the students we select.” UW-L’s athletic training program was the first accredited athletic training program in the state of Wisconsin, and offers one of the most competitive, in-depth and hands-on athletic training programs in the country.

Technology conference brings together UW System educators

UW-L hosted the UW System LTDC Technology Conference “Dynamic Practices: Engaging Students in the Classroom, Online, and Beyond” on April 26. More than 60 participated in the event, bringing together faculty, technology practitioners, consultants and architects from across Wisconsin to learn more about learning and teaching both in face-to-face and virtual environments. Herman Miller Corporation presented morning and afternoon keynotes on the future of learning. Other topics included presentations on situated learning, MOOCs, Web 2.0 tools, e-Portfolio, flipped classrooms and on-line learning.

UW-L's Director of Academic Services Jim Jorstad says the event was an invaluable experience and resource for UW System and beyond. "The collaborations and engaging discussions left the attendees with a new sense of energy and commitment to integrate effective technologies into the teaching and learning environment and process.”

Ron Cramer and Christopher Blaire Bundy from UW-Madison shared Jorstad's enthusiasm. “No price can be put on those kinds of cross-campus opportunities to share the successes and struggles we experience at the intersection of technology and teaching and learning,” they said.

Some of the sessions were streamed live and are now available on-demand. To see the sessions online go to http://tinyurl.com/ao694qg.
