Student center now and then: Students shape an ever-evolving campus

The needs of UW-L students have evolved over the last 26 years, yet students’ commitment to the future of the campus has always remained strong, says Anne Hlavacka, former president of UW-L's Student Association. Hlavacka, director of UW-L’s Small Business Development Center, compares Cartwright's 1984 addition to the student body's recent vote for a news student center.

Observe a rare sight in space

On Tuesday, June 5, Venus will transit the Sun's disc. This last happened in 2004 and it won't happen again for more than 100 years. The La Crosse Area Astronomical Society will conduct a telescope observing session to see the transit from 5 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. at Grandad Bluff park. The viewing will only happen if it is clear. This transit can only be viewed with proper filters. These filters will be provided for viewing through a telescope. The event is free. No RSVP required. For more information contact Bob Allen at 785.8669 or allen.robe@uwlax.edu.

Gymnastics team, wrestler bring home local accolades

The UW-L women’s gymnastics team and senior wrestler Bebto Yewah have been recognized by the Greater La Crosse Area Sports Connection. The gymnastics team was named the College Team of the Year for the 2010-11 season. The Eagles were one of three finalists for the award, joining the UW-L wrestling squad and the UW-L men's club volleyball team. See more. Yewah, of Lansing, Mich., was named the College Athlete of the Year. He was one of three finalists for the award, joining UW-L senior track & field athlete Isaac Vazquez and Winona State University (Minn.) baseball player Tony Mueller. See more. The connection’s 2012 banquet was held April 15.

Radiation Therapy class, program in 92nd percentile for exam scores nationally

The Radiation Therapy class of 2011 had an average American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification board exam score of 88.6 percent, placing the class and the program in the 92nd percentile for ARRT scores nationwide. Because UW-La Crosse has the only radiation therapy program in the state, Wisconsin was the highest scoring state overall.         The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association (WIAC) selected the following UW-L coaches as "Coach of the Year" in their respective sports: Josh Buchholtz for Men's Outdoor Track and Field; Pat Healy for Women's Outdoor Track and Field; and Chris Schwarz for Baseball. All three teams had outstanding seasons, culminating in WIAC championships. Brian Allen, director of Student Health, received a grant to conduct a clinical trial using a medication to treat constipation and bloating. The grant from Forrest pharmaceutical company is estimated to be $56,800, however, the exact amount depends on enrollment for the trail. The grant starts this summer and runs for about one year. Gerry Cox, professor emeritus, Sociology/Archaeology, had the article published, "Death Ends a Life, but not a Relationship," in Grief Digest Magazine, Volume 9, Issue No. 4, Spring, 2012. Ann Epstein, Educational Studies, received the Student Wisconsin Education Association (WEA) Outstanding Teacher Educator of the Year Award. She also presented the keynote address, "Latest Montessori Research" at the Polski Instytut Montessori in Warsaw, Poland, April 21. She also led two workshops: "How Much is Too Much Screen Time? Media Exposure and Children's Development" and "Montessori and Exceptional Learners" at the international conference. Jennifer Kosiak, Mathematics, will receive the 2012 UW System Regents Teaching Excellence Award at the August meeting of the UW System Board of Regents. This prestigious award, given each year to two teachers throughout UW System, pays tribute to the recipient's impressive dedication as a teacher, ability to inspire students and enthusiasm for the subject matter and learning in general. Sheri Ross, Philosophy, presented the paper "Propaganda Power of Protest Songs" to the School of Management Colloquia at Leicester University May 16. She facilitated a workshop the next day "The Wisconsin Idea, Ideology and the Classroom," which compared the underlying assumptions about the structure and purpose of university education for the Interdisciplinary Teaching Workshop at Leicester University, UK. Jörg Vianden, Student Affairs Administration, and Jeff Ruder, College of Pharmacy, Oregon State University, published "Our Best Friend is Moving Away: Exploring Parent Transition and Involvement During Their Students's First Year in College" in the most recent issue of The Journal of College and University Student Housing.
