Support of Self Sufficiency Program remains strong

[caption id="attachment_37743" align="alignnone" width="770"]Self Sufficiency breakfast November 2014 UW-L alumna Audreyona Chavez-Lorenz, who completed the Self Sufficiency Program in 2004, was the keynote speaker at this year's Self Sufficiency Locally Grown Breakfast fundraiser Nov. 12 in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Photo by UW-L student photographer Hanqing Wu.[/caption] UW-L alumna Audreyona Chavez-Lorenz, emerging half-defeated from a life of struggle, found her bearings as a successful college student through the Self Sufficiency Program, she says. In spring 2003, when she entered SSP, a free, one-semester program that offers participants an opportunity to discover their academic and career potential, she was uncertain if she could make it as a college student. "It seems that we all were contemplating the same question … can I do this?" she said in a speech she gave at the Locally Grown Breakfast in 2006. "A few weeks into class, the atmosphere had changed, we all had blossomed, no longer the doubting, self-conscious ladies that had tiptoed in on the first night, we knew we wanted to be in college and were determined to get there.” Chavez-Lorenz was back on campus for this year's breakfast — this time as the keynote speaker receiving a standing ovation from the approximately 90 who attended the annual Self Sufficiency Program Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast Nov. 12 in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Chavez-Lorenz finished SSP in May 2004 and graduated from UW-L in 2009 with a degree in microbiology. Although she is intent on pursuing more education in the future, she's currently content working at Organic Valley, a company committed to improving lives and communities in the region, she says. She continues to support the women and message of SSP. Most SSP graduates attend UW-L, Viterbo University or Western Technical College. The breakfast raises funds for student-parent scholarships for those in their first four semesters of college. Four women received scholarships at the breakfast, including:
  • Angi Hoch
  • Susan Niemi
  • Ashley St. Sauver
  • Vanessa Thompson
For more information about SSP and how to donate, email Andrea Hansen at ahansen@uwlax.edu. Donations to SSP are tax deductible. For photos of the event go to http://goo.gl/lT3eQs.

Jeans Day artwork. Friday, Nov. 21, is 'Jeans Day'

Jeans Day is Friday, Nov. 21. UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in “Jeans Day” each month. It's sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. In return for $1 (suggested donation), UW-L faculty and staff have the opportunity to wear jeans rather than usual business attire. Donations go to designated local, non-profit charities or organizations each month. The charities this month are La Crosse Community Thanksgiving Dinner and Rotary Lights. Locate your building contact person on the list below, contribute your suggested $1, and collect your Jeans Day sticker. It is not necessary to wear jeans to participate. This is a great way to unite our campus in supporting local non-profit organizations in the Greater La Crosse area. In October the campus raised $159. Let’s show the community how generous we can be. Ways to avoid common illnesses via nutrition

It’s that of time year — as the weather gets colder, the numbers of cold and flu cases get higher. Thankfully, you can reduce your risk of catching the common winter illnesses by consuming foods that are full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Antioxidants in particular have the ability to prevent or delay some types of cell damage. Consumption of fruits and vegetables can most definitely help keep your body strong and ward off infection. Here are some other foods that Health magazine deems to be helpful in fighting common illnesses: Fish — Oily fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel contain omega-3 fatty acids that can help reduce harmful inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation prevents the immune systems from working properly. In a 2011 study published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity, medical students who took fish oil supplement for three months had lower inflammation status and fewer symptoms of anxiety — a condition that can, in fact, weaken the immune system. Yogurt — Yogurt contains probiotics that aid with digestive health and prevent stomach ailments. A 2011 review of probiotic usefulness found that consuming probiotics, whether in food or supplement form, can lower the risk of upper respiratory tract infections. Tea — All tea — black, green or white — contains a group of antioxidants known as catechins which may have flu-fighting properties. In a 2011 Japanese study, people who took catechin capsules for five months had 75 percent lower odds of catching the flu than people not taking the capsule. Other research also suggests that catechins may have the power to boost overall immunity, rev up metabolism and protect against cancer and heart disease. Milk —The vitamin D found in milk, orange juice and breakfast cereals can help keep colds at bay. A 2009 study from Massachusetts General Hospital found that lower vitamin D levels were associated with a greater risk of upper respiratory infections. In 2012, the same researchers found that vitamin D supplements can assist in warding off winter colds in children. Food definitely has a powerful effect on the body. Make it a goal to consume a couple of these foods a day.
