UW-L professor named Wisconsin Professor of the Year
Victor M. Macías-González came to the U.S. from Mexico in fourth grade with little to no English. He was soon on the 4th grade honor roll, in the sixth grade gifted and talented program, and the second-place winner of the eighth grade spelling bee. Graduating seniors to exhibit at UW-La Crosse show
Ten UW-La Crosse art students will celebrate the culmination of their undergraduate creative efforts in an upcoming exhibit. “Wanted: Artists of Conviction” is the title of this year’s fall senior exhibition in the University Art Gallery on the first floor of the Center for the Arts. The exhibit opens with a reception from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22,and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 11.The gallery will be closed over the Thanksgiving holiday, Nov. 28-Dec. 1. Read more »

TV telethon to support Coulee Region Humane Society; it’s the 15th year UW-L students will help raise funds
Dogs, cats and other animals at the Coulee Region Humane Society will benefit from an upcoming live TV telethon. The 15th annual Coulee Region Humane Society Telethon will air from 7-10 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23,on KQEG-TV Channel 23, Charter Cable Channel 5, CenturyLink Prism 4, Digital 989 and UW-L campus channel 6. Students in a sociology of gender class were each required to provide five digital photos of something they have seen in their world that reinforces gender stereotypical beliefs or behaviors. The photos were organized into themes related to assigned readings on gender and work, family, sexuality, health, education and more. A short film using their photos was created for them to review and discuss."Gender Through Their Lenses: A Film of Students' Images" will be shown at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 19, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.
Carol D. Miller, Sociology & Archaeology, and UW-Stout graduate student Mark J. Seitz will lead a discussion following the film. The event is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Department.

The Stacie Mathewson Foundation has awarded UW-L $10,000 to work on early-stage intervention strategies for college students in recovery. UW-L and the La Crosse County Health Department's Healthy Living for a Lifetime Program have teamed up to help challenge participants make healthy choices during the holiday season. Challenge dates run Monday, Nov. 25, through Sunday, Dec. 29.
Participants will receive:
- A five-week log to track eating and physical activity habits. A nutrition “challenge” will be given each week, however, participants will set their own fitness goal — daily activity is encouraged!
- Weekly emails, with a nutrition “challenge” and tips, as well as encouragement for regular physical activity.
Participants will be eligible to win prizes at the end of the challenge by turning in their tracking log.There are no formal weigh-in sessions for this challenge.

A professor in the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology at Iowa State University is the keynote speaker at the Thursday, Nov. 21, La Crosse BioResearch Forum. Professor Nilsen-Hamilton will speak on “Lipocalin-2: A Moonlighter in the Inflammatory Response?" from 12:15-1 p.m. in the Overholt Auditorium at Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear. The next Jeans Day is Friday, Nov. 22. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back to the local community. In October UW-L raised $103. A public meeting to present the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the proposed UW-La Crosse New Student Center project will be held at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 2, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Free parking is available in nearby Commuter Lot C2, located adjacent to the UW-L stadium at the intersection of East Avenue and Pine Street. A description of the project and potential environmental impacts will be presented, and all persons will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to identify both orally and in writing any support, issues or concerns they believe should be addressed during the EIS process for this proposed project.
The EIS will be prepared in accordance with the Wisconsin Environmental Policy Act (WEPA), Wisconsin Statutes 1.11, and University of Wisconsin System Administration (UWSA) guidelines. The project manager is the state Department of Administration’s Division of State Facilities (DSF). Ayres Associates has been retained to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on behalf of the UWSA. The New Student Center project includes construction of a new 204,787 gross square feet (GSF), multi-story facility to be located on an existing surface parking lot immediately east of Wimberly Hall. This location is centrally located on campus and provides adjacencies to the main public entrance to campus, the new stadium and fields complex and the new DFD# 10J2S UW-L Parking Ramp and Police Services Building.
The existing Police and Parking Services building on this site will be demolished prior to construction, and the Cartwright Center will remain in use until project completion. The center will be designed to provide student gathering and social areas, study areas, offices for student organization and Student Centers Administration and Admissions, general use meeting rooms, performance venues, large meeting rooms, food service kitchens and dining areas, various retail spaces, textbook rental area. The total project cost, including construction costs, is estimated at $53,300,000 and will be funded using $50,966,000 in Program Revenue Supported Borrowing and $2,334,000 Program Revenue Cash. Construction is projected to begin in June 2014 with substantial completion by the fall 2016.
The purpose of the Draft EIS is to identify potential impacts of the project on the physical, biological, social, and economic environments. The Draft EIS describing these potential impacts is being made available to the public and to appropriate federal, State, and local agencies for a 45-day review period, which begins November 18, 2013 and concludes January 2, 2014. Copies of the document are available for review at the UW-La Crosse Murphy Library and the City of La Crosse Public Library, or on the project website listed below.

Jeff C. Bryan, Chemistry, presented "Nuclear Science and Fiction in Star Trek" to two local sections — Pocatello and Idaho Falls — of the American Chemical Society in Idaho Nov. 1. The talks covered the current understanding of nuclear chemistry and physics as it is portrayed in Star Trek.
Kate Grillo, Sociology/Archaeology, published two papers in the journal Azania: Archaeological Research in Africa. The first, "The context of early megalithic architecture in eastern Africa: the Turkana Basin c. 5000-4000 BP," was published in June and was co-written with E. Hildebrand. The second, Pastoral Neolithic sites on the southern Mbulu Plateau, Tanzania," was published in November and was written with M. Prendergast, A. Mabulla, O. Seitsonen, L. Broderick, A. Gidna, and D. Gifford-Gonzalez.
Heather Jett, Murphy Library, presented "Creating a Culture of Yes" at the national Access Services Conference in Atlanta, Ga., on Nov 7.
Cecilia G. Manrique, Political Science/Public Administration, had her peer-reviewed review of the article “The Impact of SOA Implementation on IT-Business Alignment: A System Dynamics Approach” by Jae Choi, et. al. published in the Sept. 25 issue of Computing Reviews.

"Closing of ROTC program at UW-L appears to be on hold," La Crosse Tribune, Nov. 7. The ROTC program at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will not close this year, said a top university official, but details about ts future were still murky this morning...However, UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow received a phone call Wednesday night from a military leader who said the university's ROTC program would not close and be put on probation instead ... "Farm Bill, ROTC changes concern Kind," WSAU, Nov. 10. Browse library journals on tablets with BrowZine
Murphy Library is running a trial of BrowZine, a new tablet application that allows people to browse, read and monitor many of the library’s scholarly journals. The app is available for iPad or Android tablets and is free of charge during the trial period.
Items found in BrowZine can be synced with Zotero, Dropbox or several other services to help keep information together in one place. To watch a two-minute video describing how BrowZine works go to http://thirdiron.com/browzine-ipad-app/video/ .
To install the free app for the trial, search for “BrowZine” in the app stores (Apple, Google, Amazon) and download BrowZine. When initially launching BrowZine, select "University of Wisconsin-La Crosse" from the drop down list. Then, enter your campus netID/password, the same as when logging in to library resources from off campus.
To help the library decide if it should subscribe to BrowZine, complete the Electronic Resources Trial Evaluation form.
Book club to meet Nov. 21
