Encountering a world of education
This summer a UW-L student interviewed an Egyptian who lived through the uproar of a revolution in February 2011. Another student about 2,500 miles northwest in Galway, Ireland, watched an archaeologist uncover the home of a Dark Ages clan. About 1,200 miles east of Ireland, in a major German university, a student affairs student listened to a provost discuss what higher education is like in a country where education is free. UW-La Crosse ranks high for students studying abroad, international effortsUW-L continues to be recognized for stellar international efforts. The university ranks No. 30 nationally for students studying abroad. And UW-L has the fourth largest international student population of all colleges and universities in Wisconsin. The 2013 Open Doors Report ranked UW-L 30th in the nation with 435 students studying abroad during 2012-13 — highest of all UW System schools among master’s level institutions. UW-L was above the national average in study-abroad participation with 17 percent of undergraduates studying overseas. The national average is 14 percent. Read more » |
Annual Swinging Yuletide set at UW-La CrosseThe annual Swinging Yuletide will return to UW-La Crosse for an upbeat performance of big band and vocal jazz holiday favorites. The concert will feature the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, UW-L Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and the LaX Jazz4tet. Upward Bound team wins OCW Golden Spatula at this year's OCW Cook-ie Off!
The Upward Bound team won the Golden Spatula for Best Tasting Cookie with Billion Dollar Bars at this year's Organization for Campus Women Cook-ie Off! competition Nov. 21 in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. One hundred tickets were sold for the fundraiser to those who wanted to taste the cookies and vote. The Information Technology team placed a close second with its Byte Me cookies. The Human Resources team won the Best Looking Cookie Certificate for its BurgerDoodles cookie. They also won the Best Display Certificate. The next Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature John Lennon's “The John Lennon Collection” at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. There will not be an Album Encounters Friday, Nov. 29. The Planetarium’s Public Program for November is ”Cosmic Castaways.” The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30. The LeaderShape Institute, a pilot campus-wide student leadership initiative will be held on campus Friday, March 14, through Wednesday, March 19, 2014. LeaderShape's strives to create a just, caring and thriving world with leaders who have a healthy disregard for the impossible. Since its inception in 1986, The LeaderShape Institute has developed an international reputation as one of the premier leadership development programs for young adults. Faculty and staff are wanted to be "Family Cluster Facilitators." Family Cluster Facilitators work directly with a group of 10-12 students during The LeaderShape Institute to encourage dialogue and enhance learning. Students in a UW-L Communications class are facilitating a children's book drive on campus from Monday, Dec. 2, through Thursday, Dec. 5. Drop off new or gently-used books at labelled boxes in residence halls and Cartwright Center. The books will be donated to Gundersen Health System, as well as to the Salvation Army of La Crosse, to be distributed to children in the area, and to AMOS, a group that takes toys and books to the local jail for children to play with while their families visit inmates.News and upcoming events

A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "UW-L football player serves team, country," WXOW-TV, Nov. 16. Freshman linebacker Tyler Hyde is a team player. He trains almost every day with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team to earn a Division III title, and another high impact team that fights to keep America safe...But off the field, he has a different title: Cadet. "I chose military because I have an unexplainable desire to help people out, and the military is the best way I can help every person out in the country," Hyde said. Hyde is an MS1 with the UW-L's ROTC program ... "UW-L ranks 30 in nation for study abroad," WXOW-TV, Nov. 18. The UW-La Crosse ranks 30th in the country for students studying abroad. That's according to the Institute of International Education, which is funded by a State Department gran t... (video clip) "UW-L to host free speech discussion," La Crosse Tribune, Nov. 18. Two La Crosse area Republicans and a Democratic lawmaker are scheduled to discuss free speech at 7 p.m. Wednesday as part of a public forum at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse's Cartwright Center, Ward Room ... "UW-L students practice TV craft in telethon for humane society," La Crosse Tribune, Nov. 21. An annual telethon to benefit the four-legged critters at the Coulee Region Humane Society also provides a doggone good training opportunity for the two-legged critters who run the show. The telethon, to air live from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday on KQEG-TV, originated in 1999 with a University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student and continues as an incubator for other students to nurture their skills ... "Free speech forum covers UW-L controversies," La Crosse Tribune, Nov. 21.
