Posted p.m. Friday, Nov. 4, 2011

Campus Connection is UW-L's online newsletter for faculty, staff, students and retirees.

Campus Connection header. Nov. 7, 2011 Students leaders step up, work from within When James Hill was elected the first president of the UW-La Crosse Student Association in 1975, it was a tumultuous time. Students had been drafted to fight in the Vietnam War and anti-war protests were occurring across the country, including the bombing of UW-Madison’s Sterling Hall in August 1970.

Nobel Prize Winner in physics spends four days at UW-L as guest lecturer

The 12th Nobel Prize Winner in physics visited UW-L last week as part of a Distinguished Lecture Series in Physics. Theodor Hänsch shared part of the 2005 Nobel Prize in physics for his contributions to the development of laser-based precision spectroscopy. Hänsch, who started studying physics in 1961, said the invention of the laser at that time steered the course of his research for the rest of his life. His contributions to physics have made it possible to measure the frequency of laser light with extreme precision, which contributed to the development of more finely-tuned lasers. During a public presentation, “Passion for Precision,” Thursday afternoon, he spoke about the importance of precision. “Precise measurements are important in technology in many fields, but also in basic science,” explained Hänsch. “Whenever we can measure to more decimal digits, we can look where no one has looked before.” To see more photos click here and here.   [caption id="attachment_7392" align="alignnone" width="700" caption="In addition to giving a public lecture and physics seminar, Nobel Prize Winner Theodor Hänsch visited UW-L classes and met with students, faculty and administrators.
