UW-L receives national award for diversity and inclusion

  UW-La Crosse received the 2013 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) award fromINSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — UW-L will be featured along with 55 other recipients in INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine’s November 2013 issue. Read more »

Campus to welcome families during Family Weekend

Ramp, ramped-up services easing parking woes

Open house set Oct. 25. The new parking ramp that opened on campus at the start of the academic year didn’t solve all the campus’ parking problems, but it did help a lot of them. Parking Coordinator Victor Hill says feedback on the $11.75 million structure has been favorable. “For the most part, people like the ramp,” he says. “They like the convenience.” Read more »

A UW-L Associate Art Professor is among three women to exhibit in an upcoming gallery show at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona. Jennifer Terpstra will exhibit some of her latest encaustic works in “Tri-State Invitational: 3 Women from 3 States” which runs Oct. 25-Jan. 12, 2014. Read more »

UW-L music faculty, students to perform in Galesville

UW-L’s Department of Music will hold a concert at the Old Main Building in Galesville at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. The concert, featuring UW-L faculty and students, is part of the Gale Star Music Nights, a Saturday evening series that started in February in hopes of raising money for the historic building. Admission for Gale Star individual concerts is $4 for college students and younger, and $8 for others. The Old Main Building is located on the south end of 12th Street in Galesville. Read more »

UW-L sets fall choral concerts

Music notes in maroon. Four UW-La Crosse choirs will present their first concerts of the academic year. The Women’s Chorus and the Chamber Choir will perform at p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. The university’s Männerchor and Concert Choir will take the stage at7:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27. Both concerts are in Annett Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. Four from UW-L honored with YWCA Tribute Award; awards banquet slated Nov. 14

The women received the2013 YWCA Tribute to Outstanding Women award. The winners are: Elise Denlinger, Susan Fabian, Deb Hoskins and Karla Stanek, retired director of Career Services and the Academic Advising Center at UW-L. Read more »

UW-L faculty, staff win grant to study massive, open online education

UW-La Crosse faculty and staff have received a national grant to study the effectiveness of a new, online learning option that some believe has the potential to transform higher education and make college more personalized and affordable. UW-L received a $20,000 grant from Athabasca University’s MOOC Research Initiative, which is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Read more »

Art, science collaboration gains STEAM; workshop for educators slated for Nov. 16

 Jason Church named recipient of 2014 NCAA Inspiration Award

United States Army First Lieutenant and former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football player Jason Church has been named the recipient of the 2014 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Inspiration Award. The NCAA Inspiration Award is presented to a coach or administrator currently associated with intercollegiate athletics, or to a current or former varsity letter-winner at an NCAA institution who, when confronted with a life-altering situation used perseverance, dedication and determination to overcome the event and now serves as a role model to give hope and inspiration to others in similar situations. The LIVEMAROON Get-Together, open to all campus employees, is an opportunity to meet colleagues, enjoy some free beverages and treats, and win LIVEMAROON merchandise. Resident, commuter parking available for sale; sale begins 8 a.m. Oct. 21 A limited number of on-campus resident parking spaces are available for sale on a first-come, first-served basis.The sale begins at 8 a.m., Monday, Oct. 21, at Parking and Police Services, at 605 17th St. North. Consult a campus map for lot locations:
  • Resident parking is available for sale in a section of C-7, located by the Recreational Eagle Center. The permits will be sold at a prorated rate. Students who already have permits may switch to this lot. Additional charges may apply.
  • Covered resident parking in the ramp is available for an extra cost. Annual permits will only be sold.
  • Payment must be made in person by cash, check or student bill. Parking Services cannot accept credit cards.Online permit sales are not offered.
  • Resident students with C-5 permits may upgrade to C-7 for an additional $50 or to covered ramp parking for an additional $100.
A limited number of commuter parking spaces are still available for sale in the ramp and on UW-L streets. The permits are sold at a prorated rate and are available for the rest of the semester or academic year. Call 608.785.8061 or email parking@uwlax.edu for more information.

Privilege workshop to be held Oct. 22

Got privilege? Find out at a workshop about privilege at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in 340 Cartwright Center. Pride Center Peer Educator Lilah Myhre will discuss what it means to have privilege and how it impacts you and others. The event is hosted by the Pride Center. 'Shattered Glass' multi-media stage presentation set for Oct. 22

The multi-media stage presentation "Shattered Glass" demonstrates the healing power of the arts.

Through spoken word, dramatization, live music, and art, "Shattered Glass" aims to empower viewers to transcend from a state of victimization to victory.

"Shattered Glass" will be presented at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in 1400 Centennial Hall.

Keynote speakers include Shaunelle Curry, executive director of Media Done Responsibly; and Kelley Nicole, executive director of Harvardwood, a global nonprofit organization of Harvard alumni and students working to strengthen ties among the arts, media, entertainment and education.

Curry is an author, poet, master's level educator and advocate for women and youth. In 2003, Curry published her first book, "Shair's Journey Through Darkness Into Light," a women's self-development toolkit. Curry has been featured on radio broadcasts in Los Angeles and other parts of southern California, as well as in Chicago, Atlanta and Philadelphia.

Nicole combines a spunky funky attitude and an alluring R&B acoustic vulnerability.  She was formerly one of the lead vocalists for the critically-acclaimed Afro-funk band Soulfege.

The free event is sponsored by UW-L's Violence Prevention Office; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department;  the Women’s Studies Student Association; and the Wellness Resource Center.

UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear.  The next Jeans Day is Friday, Oct. 25. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back big to the local community. In September UW-L raised $54. Pink Floyd is featured band at Oct. 25 Album Encounters; public program continues

The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature Pink Floyd's’ “Dark Side of the Moon”at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $5. The Planetarium’s Public Program for October  is ”Two Small Pieces of Glass.”  The talk, followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation, will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays in October. Admission is $3 for students, seniors and children, and $5 for others. 'Make A Difference Day' set for Oct. 26

Meet at the Roger Harring Stadium at the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, and be a part of "Make A Difference Day." Meet other students, including those from student organizations, at a Campus Block Party with snacks. Groups will go to help with volunteer opportunities in the La Crosse community, such as Ghoulees in the Coulees, Enchanted Forest (trick or treating on the marsh path), Bethany Riverside Halloween Party, Festival Pumpkin Fest (trick or treating in Festival Foods), and the Onalaska YMCA Color Dash. Get free bike lights at Oct. 29 Light Up the Night event

Get a free set of lights installed on your bicycle Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Light Up the Night event. Meet at UW-L's Recreational Eagle Center at 4:30 p.m. Daylight ride to Root Note at 115 Fourth St. South. Take advantage of Root Note's available specials. And get free bike lights. The event is open  to anyone with a bicycle needing lights. Light Up the Night is sponsored by the Driftless Region Bicycle Coalition and Rec Sports.

All veterans who want to be considered for priority registration at UW-L should contact Veterans Educational Benefits Office by noon Oct. 23

The Wisconsin Senate recently passed a bill that will provide veterans with priority registration starting the spring 2014 semester. At UW-L, priority registration means veterans can register at the beginning of their class group. To be considered for priority registration, veterans must have been honorably discharged and have DD-214 or NOBE paperwork on file in UW-L's Veterans Educational Benefits Office, 116 Graff Main Hall. All veterans should stop in the office or contact Nicole Jablonski at njablonski@uwlax.edu or 608.785.8751 by noon Wednesday, Oct. 23, to ensure paperwork is on file.  The paperwork is necessary before veterans can be added to the priority list. LEGAL NOTICE: Public Scoping Meeting Environmental Impact Statement New Student Center University of Wisconsin–La Crosse DFD Project #12H2W
An Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) scoping meeting to present the proposed UW-La Crosse New Student Center project will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Parking is available free of charge in nearby Commuter Lot C2, located adjacent to the UW-L stadium at the intersection of East Avenue and Pine Street. A description of the project will be presented and all persons will be afforded a reasonable opportunity to identify both orally and in writing any support, issues or concerns they believe should be addressed during the EIS process for this proposed project. The EIS will be prepared in accordance with the Wisconsin Environmental Policy Act (WEPA), Wisconsin Statutes 1.11, and University of Wisconsin System Administration (UWSA) guidelines. The project manager is the state Department of Administration’s Division of State Facilities (DSF). Ayres Associates has been retained to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on behalf of the UWSA. The New Student Center project includes construction of a new 204,787 gross square feet (GSF), multi-story facility to be located on an existing surface parking lot immediately east of Wimberly Hall. This location is centrally located on campus and provides adjacencies to the main public entrance to campus, the new stadium and fields complex and the new DFD# 10J2S UW-L Parking Ramp and Police Services Building. The existing Police and Parking Services building on this site will be demolished prior to construction, and the Cartwright Center will remain in use until project completion. The center will be designed to provide student gathering and social areas, study areas, offices for student organization and Student Centers Administration and Admissions, general use meeting rooms, performance venues, large meeting rooms, food service kitchens and dining areas, various retail spaces, textbook rental area. The total project cost, including construction costs, is estimated at $53,300,000 and will be funded using $50,966,000 in Program Revenue Supported Borrowing and $2,334,000 Program Revenue Cash. Construction is projected to begin in June 2014 with substantial completion by the fall of 2016. An initial requirement of the EIS is the scoping process, with the intent of identifying at an early stage any potential impacts of the project on the physical, biological, social, historic and economic environments. Impacts that are identified during this process will be incorporated into a Draft EIS which will be made available to the public for a 45-day review period and circulated to appropriate federal, state, local agencies and interested parties. "Nobel winner shares work with La Crosse college students," La Crosse Tribune, Oct. 11. David Wineland’s story about how he won the Nobel Prize is a story about tiny particles, lasers and the bizarre case of a cat both alive and dead at the same time. It’s also the story of his life. Wineland, 69, is the 2012 winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics. He explained the theory of Schrödinger’s Cat on Thursday with La Crosse college students and community members, and shared how it relates to his award-winning research in physics ... "Top UW-L official gets $10,500 salary bump," La Crosse Tribune, Oct. 11. The top official at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse was approved for a $10,500 salary bump Thursday, but says he plans to give the money away for need-based scholarships ... Library has subject guides for all UW-L majors

Murphy Library has a subject guide for each major on campus. The guides offer a portal-like approach to organizing information resources by subject. The guides include links to subject-specific resources such as:
  • Key resources, regardless of type or format
  • Essential and additional databases
  • Books, e-books and online scholarly encyclopedias
  • Relevant library guides and course-related guides
  • Web resources, Google Books and Google Scholar
The subject guides also provide links to general library information, library quick links, campus resources and more.
