University Police raise funds to fight breast cancer in a passionately pink way

This Wednesday a police car will be adorned in pink near UW-La Crosse’s Hoeschler Tower as University Police join other emergency services around Wisconsin in a statewide movement, Justice For A Cure. The initiative among law enforcement departments and other government agencies aims to raise money and show support for the fight against breast cancer.

UW-L water ski team advances to nationals

As water temperatures go down in area lakes, UW-La Crosse’s water ski team is just getting fired up. The team competes in nationals Oct. 18-20 in Zachary, La., after consistently defeating teams spanning across seven states this semester to become regional champions. The team is ranked third in the nation as it enters the national arena.

Tavern League completes $25,000 donation

The La Crosse Area Tavern League recently completed its $25,000 pledge to the UW-L Crosse Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.

Campus debates return Tuesday

The Political Science and Public Administration Department's campus debates will continue this week. Incumbent Sen. Jennifer Shilling (D) and Bill Feehan (R), candidates for the 32nd Senate District, will face off from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. UW-L Political Science Professor Joe Heim will moderate the forum, which is free and open to the public. Sponsors include: the La Crosse Tribune, League of Women Voters, WKBT-TV, WXOW-TV, and the UW-L Joint Legislative Relations Committee. The final debate for the Third Congressional District will feature incumbent Ron Kind (D) and challenger Col. Ray Boland (R). Campus United Way campaign underway

Jeans Day is Friday, Oct. 26; wear your LIVEMAROON gear!

UW-L is one of many local organizations that participate in the monthly “Jeans Day” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive our donations. In return for a $1 (suggested donation) UW-L employees may wear jeans to work Friday, Oct. 26. You may contribute even if you don’t wear jeans.  Let’s show our community how generous we can be! Feel free to wear LIVEMAROON T-shirts or maroon clothing on Fridays, especially Jeans Day Fridays. The charities receiving the October contributions are: La Crosse Area Suicide Prevention Initiative – This organization raises awareness that suicide is a problem and that it is preventable. LIVESTRONG at the YMCA-Alumni Club – This program is a research-based physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors reclaiming their total health. Dave Matthews Band is featured at Oct. 26 Album Encounters; public program ‘Let There Be Night’ set for Saturdays throughout October

The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show features Dave Matthews Band "Away From the World" at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $4. The Planetarium’s Public October program is “Let There Be Night.” It will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturdays Oct. 27. Monthly public programs are planned for October, November, December, February, March and April. Admission is $2 for students and children and $4 for others. Office of International Education to host CHINA Town Hall Oct. 29

The fourth Annual CHINA Town Hall, sponsored by the La Crosse Luoyang Friendship Association (LLFA) and the National Committee on U. S. - China Relations (NCUSCR), will be on campus from 6:45-9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct 29, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, 1300 Centennial Hall. This is part of a national day of programming concentrating on U.S. and Chinese relations and topics of interest in 50 venues throughout the United States. Events include:

• 7 p.m.  — webcast featuring Gary Locke, U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China, in discussion with Steve Orlins, president of NCUSCR, will examine "Current Issues in U.S.-China Relations." Locke will share his perspective and answer questions submitted from the 50 venues.
• 7:50 p.m. — UW-L students from China will present traditional Chinese dance.
• 8 p.m. — Karil J Kucera, associate professor of Asian Visual Culture at St. Olaf College, will present "Chinese Culture Reflected in Art: Lessons of the Terracotta Warriors." A Terracotta Warriors Exhibit will begin in late October at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. A joint venture of LLFA and the La Crosse Library has scheduled a day trip to Minneapolis and the MIA to see the exhibit on Saturday, Dec 1. Group for faculty and IAS women of color to meet Oct. 30

All faculty or Instructional Academic Staff who identify as women of color are welcome to attend an informal gathering at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in 161 Wing Technology Center. The purpose of the group is for UW-L's community of minority women to make cross-disciplinary connections, build friendships and provide support related to teaching, research and service. Fine-press artist book at Murphy Library; panel discussion set for Nov. 1

Murphy Library is sponsoring an artist's panel from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the library's Special Collections to explore the fine-press artist's book "Crossing the Tigris." The handmade book was conceived, created and written by Brian Borchardt, Caren Heft and Jeffrey Morin, three artists and professors from UW-Stevens Point. It was jointly published by three Wisconsin small presses. Made with handmade paper and handsewn binding in a drop letterfold container with twine tie closure, "Crossing the Tigris" is a narrative in three books recounting soldiers' stories from the Iraq War. A joint statement from the three presses describes the book as a "collaboration is intended to catalyze a conversation about the nature of change that allows potentially decent people to commit indecent acts." The artists will speak about their fine presses, collaborative paper making and research on the Iraq War and will read from their book.
