"Use Somebody — A Speed Meeting Event" is set for 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14, in the Recreational Eagle Center, Court No. 4. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the fun and interactive speed meeting event hosted by AnDrea Higgins and Jamin Whitman, Student Success Center. All participants will receive goodies and snacks. Bring your student ID and wear soft-soled shoes.

Personalized medicine research at Marshfield Clinic is topic of September BioResearch Forum
Dr. Murray Brilliant, director of the Center for Human Genetics Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation, is the guest speaker at the upcoming La Crosse BioResearch Forum. He will present “Personalized Medicine Research at Marshfield Clinic” from 12:15-1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, in the Overholt Auditorium.
Forums are held monthly. Forums are free and open to the public and are hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Download a 2011 La Crosse BioResearch Forum schedule.

Album Encounter multimedia light and laser show set for Sept. 16

Final performances of 'Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead' are Sept. 17 & 18
Final performances of the student-produced play "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" are set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, in Frederick Theatre, Morris Hall.
Follow your favorite comic strip characters through a seriocomic coming of age journey. The show is funded in part by an undergraduate research grant. Production, direction, management, design and performances were done entirely by students. Although admission is free, donations are encouraged and go toward theatre scholarships. Explicit content and language; mature audiences only.

The phone numbers listed in the “Home” and “Local” Phone Types will be printed. Many students have their cell phone numbers in the “Cell” Phone Type. If you would like your cell phone number to be printed, log into WINGS and use the Demographic Data link to add your cell phone number to the “Local” Phone type. If you do not want your cell phone published in the Student + Staff Directory, do not enter it in the “Home” or “Local” Phone Types.

Multicultural faculty and staff potluck social is Sept. 23
UW-L's Multicultural Faculty and Staff Organization (MUFASO) will host a potluck social at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, to kick off the new academic year. Outstanding alumni sought for awards Do you keep in touch with former students? Are they doing amazing work in their communities? The Alumni Association is looking for candidates for the UW-La Crosse Alumni Association Awards Program. Submit names of those you want to be considered for the 2012 awards by Saturday, Oct. 1. The awards program was established in 1977 with one award, the Maurice O. Graff Distinguished Alumni Award. Over the past 34 years, the program has grown to recognize accomplishments of alumni at different stages of their careers. The Maurice O. Graff Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who attended at least 20 years ago and have achieved honor and distinction with recognition that extends well beyond the immediate environments in which they live and work. The Rada Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have graduated within the last 20 years from UW-L. The award honors recent to mid-career alumni who are making exceptional contributions to their professions and/or communities. The Parker Multicultural Alumni Award recognizes living multicultural alumni who have graduated from UW-L whose contributions to their field have not necessarily received public acclaim. Once nominated, candidates must submit their resume, three letters of reference and any additional documentation they wish to provide. Concealed Carry changes will impact campus
New state law takes effect Nov. 1
Wisconsin’s new concealed carry law will impact UW campuses, along with many other organizations and businesses in the state. Under the law that takes effect Nov. 1, an organization or business must post signs at building entrances if weapons or knives are not allowed.
A campus committee met late last month to discuss campus policy. Committee members informally voted to recommend all campus governance groups to support a resolution banning weapons from UW-L buildings and grounds. The four governance groups are expected to discuss concealed carry during their September meetings. Campus employees are welcome to attend these meetings to provide input.
UW-L Police Chief Scott Rohde says while the legislature decriminalized current concealed carry laws in July, the full law takes effect Nov. 1. Arguments supporting the changes were Second Amendment rights and a person’s right to protect themselves, he says.
Under the law, guns, tasers, clubs and knives — not switchblades — may legally be carried and concealed by licensed individuals. For an area to be excluded, a building must have signs at the entrance excluding the weapons.
Parking lots cannot have exclusions, so loaded and unloaded weapons may be kept in vehicles. Land maintained by campus can be exempted from concealed carry if signs are properly posted.
Rohde says campus governance groups will give input on posting concealed carry restrictions on campus to Chancellor Joe Gow. A decision on restrictions is expected in October.

Smashers at the Galley new this fall
The Galley in Cartwright Center is now offering a new grill concept: Smashers! Smashers offers a fresh new taste of burgers and other sandwich options, such as grilled cheeses, fish and chicken sandwiches and vegan burgers. Check out the new menu here.
Throughout September, every 100th order will receive a free meal for Smashers in The Galley.

Murphy now has The Historical Wall Street Journal
The campus community now has access to The Historical Wall Street Journal, a digital archive of the entire newspaper, with coverage from July 8, 1889–Dec. 31, 1993 thanks to UW-L students, who recognized the value of this archival collection and funded it through UW-L's academic initiatives program. The Historical Wall Street Journal provides a true digital reproduction of each page and each article that originally appeared in the Wall Street Journal. It provides page maps in PDF format while also threading together into one image stories that originally spanned multiple pages. In addition to the printed stories, the database provides charts, stock tables, graphics and illustrations. Users of The Historical Wall Street Journal will be able to: • Search for information by keyword, more than 20 article types (front page, stock quote, editorial article, letter to the editor, etc.), dates and date ranges, author and more. • Browse complete issues, cover to cover. • Print, download and share articles and images in PDF format. • Cross-search topics and compare coverage and perspectives across with The Historical The New York Times, which was also funded by students through UW-L’s Academic Initiatives program last year. Find The Historical Wall Street Journal, in the library’s list of all databases by title, in relevant Murphy Library Subject Guides and currently featured on the library home page.
UW-L's Organization of Campus Women Book Club will meet from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept 14, at Mc Caffrey's Coffee, 1808 State St., to discuss "The Physician's Tale" by Ann Benson. The club is also reading "No Impact Man" by Colin Beavan who will be on campus on Oct. 5. A date to discuss "No Impact Man" will be announced.
The OCW Book Club meets monthly. Participation is open to all faculty, staff and students.
