UW-L marks largest enrollment in school history

UW-L class of 2017 form an eagle L on the football field. UW-La Crosse has the largest freshman class since 1986 and record enrollment this fall. Despite that growth, the university has maintained a highly personalized experience for students by lowering its student-to-faculty ratio over the last five years, says UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow. This fall UW-L has 1,990 new first-year students, contributing to a grand total of 10,427 students. Historic picture of exercise class. UW-La Crosse’s oldest academic department is celebrating 100 years during the 2013-14 academic year with a series of presentations. The Department of Exercise and Sport Science will look back at its early years — and into the future during the series of special programs. Professor Emeritus A.B. Culver will open the series with a presentation on “The Walter Wittich Years” at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Admission is free. Read more »

Retired UW-L fundraiser is part of this year’s Royal Family

For more than 30 years, Kenna Christians and her husband, Roger, have hosted a party for family and friends along Oktoberfest’s Maple Leaf Parade route. They even brought musical instruments to create the “Rose Street Band” for parade breaks — an annual crowd favorite. This year they won’t be performing. Instead, they’ll be in the parade. Christians will be riding on the Oktoberfest float as one of her first official appearances as Mrs. Oktoberfest 2013. Read more »   

UW-L and local high schools solidify partnership

UW-L, the School District of La Crosse and Aquinas Catholic Schools have formalized its long-standing partnership that allows La Crosse Central High School and Aquinas High School to play its varsity football games in Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex on the UW-L campus. ‘I Love Female Orgasm’ back by popular demand

Police Services launches bike theft program

Officer Dave Pehl stands by bikes on campus. Bike theft is the No. 1 reported crime on the UW-La Crosse campus — a statistic that has prompted a UW-L police officer to launch a bike theft prevention program this fall. Nearly 300 bikes have been stolen on campus in the last five years, notes Pehl. Read more »

New history book of UW-La Crosse to be unveiled

‘We’ve Hung the Lantern’ will cover from 1909-1964

A new book will cover the visual history of the first 55 years of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

“We've Hung the Lantern” will review more than just the first half century of the institution that opened its doors in 1909. The nearly 200-page book will include the periods of 1909-26 when the institution was known as the La Crosse Normal School; 1927-1950, when it was La Crosse State Teacher's College; and 1951-1964, when it was Wisconsin State College.  The visual history of the campus, students and faculty — along with three educational formats and 18 buildings — will be detailed in 224 historic images. Professor Emeritus Leslie Crocker will unveil his book during a presentation at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, in the UW-L Cleary Alumni & Friends Center.

Poet Ken McCullough to read from book Oct. 3

A former Poet Laureate of Winona and honorary tribesman of the Miniconjou band of Lakota will read from his newest book on campus this week. Poet Ken McCullough will read from "Broken Gates" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, in 1400 Centennial Hall. McCullough's work is well-known for its deep connections to the people and places of the American Midwest and West.
McCullough is a fine storyteller--one of the signature regional voices of our time.

University Bookstore to host National Student Day event on Oct. 3

The University Bookstore is recognizing student volunteerism. On Thursday, Oct. 3, go to the University Bookstore and  ask a University Bookstore associate how to get a club or organization involved in National Student Day. And buy one T-shirt or set of Gumy Earbuds and get the second at a 50 percent discount — while supplies last. The bookstore supports The Thirst Project, a non-profit organization aimed at solving the global water crisis by building fresh water wells for communities in need.

UW-L to add 6 to Athletic Wall of Fame

Four former University of Wisconsin-La Crosse student-athletes will be joined by two major supporters of athletics in the university’s Wall of Fame.
The four alumni being inducted, the sports in which they participated and their years as a UW-L athlete include: • Laura (Waterhouse) Ball, swimming and diving, 1996-2000 • Greg Barczak, cross country and track, 1981-85 • Phil Ertl, football, 1983-86 • Patti (Franckowiak) Krautscheid, track and field, 1995-99 The Wall of Fame pays tribute to former athletes and coaches for their exceptional ability and enhancement of school tradition. In addition Dave and Barb Skogen will receive the Donald Gordon Merit Award, which recognizes long-time supporters of UW-L athletics. This year’s inductees will be honored during a brunch at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, in the Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. For more information see www.uwlalumni.org.

Temporary closure of Main Street may limit access to Parking Lot C-1 Oct. 7-Nov. 8

A Main Street reconstruction project from 20th Street through the 17th Street intersection is set to begin the week of Oct. 7. The project will require a temporary full closure of Main Street at these locations. Alleys will remain open from the side streets, as will the entrance to Lot C-1 from State Street, but Main Street will be blocked. Plan accordingly as travel will be inconvenient in this neighborhood area. The closure of Main Street will last for several weeks. It is anticipated to be reopened by Friday, Nov. 8.

Deadline to request application documents is Oct. 9; applications due Oct. 16

Grants are available on a competitive basis to support undergraduate and international undergraduate research and creativity activities to all full-time (12+ credits) and part-time (1-11 credits) UW-L undergraduates.  Students who want to receive funding for their research or creative work should request application documents (via Google Docs) by emailing stdtresearch@uwlax.edu by Wednesday, Oct. 9. Undergraduate Research & Creativity Grants are due Wednesday Oct. 16. UW-L is dedicated to supporting research, scholarly and creative activities by students in all academic disciplines. UW-L aims to enhance this experience with institutional support for students and faculty mentors. The Undergraduate Research & Creativity Program is dedicated to fulfilling the UW-L mission of fostering curiosity and life-long learning through collaboration, innovation and the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge.

Deadline to take Centennial Hall survey is Oct. 13

Centennial Hall was awarded LEED® Gold certification in January 2013 establishing UW-L as not only a university committed to providing students with a great education, but also environmentally sustainable facilities. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a national green building certification system. As part of the certification process, UW-L Facilities Planning and Management requests anonymous feedback on UW-L's ability to maintain thermal comfort in Centennial Hall. Complete the five- to 10-minute Centennial Hall Thermal Comfort Survey, which measures occupant satisfaction with temperature, humidity and air flow in the building by Sunday, Oct. 13.  Results will available soon thereafter. Student, faculty, staff in distress, disruptive, dangerous is topic of Oct. 4 brown bag lunch discussion

Angie Lee, Student Life, will lead the discussion “The 3 D’s: Students, Faculty or Staff that are in Distress, Disruptive and/or Dangerous.” The “Brown Bag Lunch Film Series: Bring Your Food, Bring Your Thoughts” discussion is set for 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4, in Port O' Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The office of Campus Climate hosts the year-long series with discussions on the first Friday of every month to discuss contemporary social justice, diversity and climate issues. Films range from TED Talks to documentaries and typically last less than 45 minutes, with discussion afterward. Discussions are free and open to everyone. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and are welcome to come late or leave early. Julia Johnson, College of Liberal Studies, had the co-authored essay “Seeing, Channeling and Weaving: Coming to Christie Logan” (Lesa Lockford and Marc Rich, co-authors) published in the July issue of Text and Performance Quarterly. Cecilia G. Taste the fall harvest The harvest is in full swing in Wisconsin and now is the perfect time to indulge in the season’s bounty. Check out the Harvest of the Month program in the Cartwright Center Galley for samplings and features of seasonal produce and information on how to prepare them. University Dining offers local seasonal produce whenever possible. La Crosse also has several farmers markets brimming with the seasons finest. Right now you are sure to find a variety of squash, potatoes, beets, greens and apples, along with less familiar items such as sun chokes and celeriac. You can even use seasonal produce if you’re living in the residence halls. Try these seasonal items that only require a microwave:
  • Caramel apples: melt caramel in microwave and coat whole apples or slices
  • Applesauce: peel and core apples; add sugar and cinnamon; cover and heat in microwave, stirring occasionally, until mushy
  • Squash or pumpkin: poke holes in skin, heat in microwave until soft; let cool; remove skin and seeds; add brown sugar and butter (optional)
  • Spaghetti squash: cook as above and top with pasta sauce
  • Peel and chop potatoes and beets; microwave covered until soft; add balsamic vinegar, olive oil, marjoram, salt and pepper
  • Add cooked pumpkin or squash to oatmeal or pudding
  • No bake pie: mix cooked pumpkin or squash, vanilla or pumpkin pudding, cinnamon and nutmeg; spread into prepared graham cracker crust; top with whipped topping
