Mo McAlpine advocates a lifetime appreciation of recreation

Mo McAlpine in REC. Mo knows — Mo McAlpine remembers the first day she stepped into Mitchell Hall. The Division I basketball player and collegiate assistant coach was pursuing a master’s degree for a career in coaching. But during her UW-La Crosse visit in July 1990 she was offered a graduate assistantship in campus recreation. She’s been on campus since, working with the Recreational Sports Department. Read more »

Keynote speaker from a multicultural organizational development firm to address UW-La Crosse about leadership

New program pairs freshmen with faculty mentors

A program starting on campus this fall will help freshmen build strong relationships with faculty, gain experience in their career field and earn money to pay for college. UW-L will launch the Eagle Apprenticeship program this fall with a pilot of four incoming, freshmen. The program pairs the freshmen with faculty mentors who provide them research or other assistantship experience for two to three hours each week over the course of two years. Work is often related to a student’s career goals. Freshmen will receive a $1,000 award for the year, and, as sophomores, they will receive $2,000. Read more »

Area high school students to attend UW-L’s Band Day

Donate bikes to UW-L’s Green Bike Program

Green Bike logo.

UW-La Crosse’s Green Bike Program, which shares and recycles bikes, has run out of bikes for the first time in its 10-year history. You can help by donating a bike — whether it’s in working condition or not. Donations will ease parking and traffic congestion in the campus area, help get more students biking, promote a healthy lifestyle, decrease automobile use, and help keep waste out of the landfill. Read more »

FastTrack students get a head start on math

This year, FastTrack students joined over 100 students from Milwaukee and another 100 from around the world as they worked on their math skills online prior to coming to campus. Overall the program was very successful. Thirty-six of the 37 incoming freshman were placed into a higher level mathematics (MTH 150 College Algebra or MTH 151 Precalculus). Of those 36 students, 14 students advanced more than one mathematics course based on their original math placement.[/caption]

Students experience dangers of texting and driving on simulator Sept. 6

UW-L senior Kelly McClone tried her hand at texting and driving in the texting simulator Sept. 6.[/caption] Texting can be more dangerous than alcohol to drivers and government officials are starting to take notice. Laws are being passed in many states to ban texting while driving, and a large number of PSAs are being broadcast on internet and TV. UW-La Crosse teamed up with PEER Awareness to inform students about the dangers of texting while driving with a driving simulator on campus Sept. 6. The AWARE TXT Driving Simulator allows students to sit in a real car suspended and monitored with sensors to simulate real driving. The simulator allowed students to experience the difficulty of texting while driving.

New UW-L center helps students with public speaking skills

UW-L now has a Public Speaking Center in the Murphy Learning Center in 251 Murphy Library. The Public Speaking Center provides quality peer-to-peer consulting for UW-L students who want help with oral presentations and public speaking assignments. Peer consultants aid students with topic selection, outlines, content development, delivery, audio-visual aids and managing speaking anxiety. Fall 2013 hours are:
  • Monday: 11 a.m.–5:30 p.m. and 7–10 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 8:30 am–2 p.m. and 2:30-8 p.m. 
  • Wednesday: 10 a.m.–7 p.m. 
  • Thursday: 8:30 a.m.-noon and 2:30-7 p.m. 
  • Friday: noon-3 p.m.
  • Saturday: closed 
  • Sunday: 11 a.m.–1 p.m. and 4-7 p.m.

Sorority recruitment event set for Sept. 11

Students can learn more about joining a sorority at a recruitment open house from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, in the Ward Room, Cartwright Center. Meet the chapters from 7-8 p.m.

Find out how to fund research at Sept. 17 grant writing workshop for students

A grant writing workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in 156 Cowley Hall for undergraduate and graduate students who want to receive funding for their research and creative projects. Free pizza will be served at 6 p.m. Students will learn how to submit a grant proposal to the Undergraduate Research & Creativity Committee (URCC) or the Graduate Studies Office. Students who want to apply for Undergraduate Research & Creativity Grants must request a URCC grant application (via Google docs) by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9. Request enrollment by emailing stdtresearch@uwlax.edu.  Students who attend the Grant Writing Workshop will be automatically enrolled. Grant applications are due by 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16. Hate logo.Sept. 17 campus-wide forum to discuss hate and bias on campus

UW-L's Hate Response Team (HRT) will hold a campus-wide open forum to discuss the current state of hate and bias at UW-L from 4-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, in 1400 Centennial Hall. The team will present information from its 2012-13 End-of-Year report, which includes current trends and patterns, lessons learned and ideas for moving forward. The team will also share tips on how to support the mission of HRT. Audience questions and comments are welcome. The HRT team works to prevent hate and bias incidents from creating a hostile environment for any individual or group on campus and encourages everyone to oppose messages of hate and intolerance, support inclusiveness. Learn how to use DigiCOPY, UW-L’s provider of copying and printing services, during training sessions Friday, Sept. 20. DigiCOPY representatives will be on campus for a series of instructional sessions including what products and services are available, how to set up an account and how to place orders over the Web. Introductory and advanced presentations will be held in 31 Wing Technology Center. Beginner sessions will be an hour long and held at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., while intermediate training will last a half hour and be held at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Time will also be available for the campus community to drop in for one-on-one assistance. Sept. 21 walk to raise money to end Alzheimer's

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Southside Oktoberfest Grounds. Walk-in registration begins at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 10:30 a.m.  The walk helps promote awareness of the disease and raises money for advocacy and scientific research. Nominate outstanding alumni for the UW-L Alumni Association Awards Program. Submit names of alumni to be considered for the 2014 awards by Tuesday, Oct. 1. Awards include:
  • The Maurice O.Graff Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who attended UW-L at least 20 years ago and have achieved honor and distinction with recognition that extends well beyond the immediate environments in which they live and work.
  • The Rada Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes alumni who have graduated within the last 20 years who are making exceptional contributions to their professions and/or communities.
  • The Parker Multicultural Alumni Award recognizes alumni who are multicultural or who have contributed significantly to the improvement of multiracial culture and understanding on the campus and in their careers.

James Longhurst, History, published the article "The Sidepath Not Taken: Bicycles, Taxes, and the Rhetoric of the Public Good in the 1890s" in the most recent number of the Journal of Policy History.  The article uncovers a forgotten history of bicycle path building in New York, Minneapolis and nationwide in the late 19th century.  This research was supported by a UW-L Faculty Research Grant and will culminate in a book to be published by University of Washington Press.   UW-L Dining Services logo
