Ceremonial Groundbreaking is Nov. 16

Construction on a new science facility at UW-La Crosse is underway. The public is invited to celebrate the project at a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday, Nov. 16. The new science labs building will address a lack of space and severely deteriorating infrastructure in Cowley Hall, the existing physical and life sciences facility. When Cowley was built in 1965 and added on to in 1969 and 1970, fewer science programs were offered at UWL and fewer students were attending. The $82 million dollar four-story science labs building will include 35 new instructional and research laboratories for biology, chemistry, geography and earth science, physics, microbiology, river studies and the radiation center. It will also include a shared administrative and building support spaces. The building is scheduled to be completed in winter 2018. About $296 million in new building projects are complete or in progress at UW-La Crosse since 2007. Another $126 million in projects are on the horizon through 2020. These projects, dating back to the construction of the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex, have employed architects, engineers and construction workers. They’ve led to the purchasing of building materials and furnishings. All of this adds up to an overall economic impact of $928 million to the region, using the industry standard 2.2 multiplier. The groundbreaking will include comments from UWL faculty, staff and students, along with a traditional golden shovel ceremony.
