Abby Siakpere, a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, recently moved to La Crosse from the Chicago area after being discharged from the Army. “My main decisions in coming to UWL were the biology department, the new building and the excellent reputation the biology program has,” says the biology major. Siakpere says the Veterans Benefits Office was extremely welcoming. “They were the first people to give me a hug when I came to campus,” she notes. “I felt included being a non-traditional student. They helped me get involved with the veterans’ groups, and opened my eyes to opportunities for older students and made me feel welcome as a veteran.”

Online service says UW-La Crosse is top in state for vets studying biology

Veterans planning to go to college — especially those wanting to major in biology — should strongly consider University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

“UW-La Crosse is an excellent university with a proven track record,” says Brannan.

The college rating service College Factual has ranked UW-La Crosse No. 1 out of 17 Wisconsin colleges and universities reviewed when it comes to offering a quality education to veterans studying biology. UWL also ranks No. 89 out of 820 nationally, which puts UWL in the top 15 percent of all schools in the nation. UWL Veteran’s Education Benefits Coordinator Jane Brannan believes the university ranked well because of its exceptional reputation. “UW-La Crosse is an excellent university with a proven track record,” says Brannan. “It also has the right mix of academic rigor, affordability, and veteran-related services for students to thrive and graduate.” [caption id="attachment_53379" align="alignright" width="225"] Jane Brannan[/caption] Brannan says the UWL Veteran’s Education Benefits Office proactively engages veterans, and assists them with initial student recruitment and enrollment events. Other services on campus include: • an office staffed by a full-time veteran education benefits coordinator • acceptance of credit recommendations from the American Council of Education (ACE) for military courses and training • a Student Veterans of America Chapter • a policy of following the VA Principles of Excellence and Department of Defense (DOD) Memorandum of Understanding More than 350 of UWL’s 10,569 students use veteran and military-related education benefits on campus. Biology is the top major for veteran and military-affiliated students with 14 students. Biology is also the most popular major at UWL, with nearly 3,000 enrolled in the discipline. For its rankings, College Factual focuses on these outcomes: • Graduation and retention rates. • Student loan default rates. • Early and mid-career earnings of graduates from each college.
