Funding of public education in Wisconsin is topic of talk
A former education reform advocate will discuss the funding of public education in the Badger state.
Michael R. Ford, an associate professor of public administration at UW-Oshkosh, will speak on “Does Money Matter? Funding Public Education in Wisconsin” at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 12, in 1400 Centennial Hall at UW-La Crosse, 308 N 16th St. Admission is free.
Public education is the largest single budget item in Wisconsin, yet the specifics of how Wisconsin funds its schools is not widely understood, says Ford. During the presentation he will provide a comprehensive overview of Wisconsin’s school funding system, specifically focusing on:
• Where education funds come from
• How education funds are distributed
• The logic of Wisconsin’s school aid formula
• The impact of school choice on school funding
• The connection between funding and performance.
Ford says the presentation will cover the changing landscape of public education governance in Wisconsin, along with a set of policy recommendations on how to improve education financing in Wisconsin.
