UW-La Crosse instrumental and vocal music groups will give holiday performances throughout December. Don’t miss: the annual Swinging Yuletide, vocal jazz ensembles, and UW-L Festival of Carols.

The annual Swinging Yuletide will return to UW-La Crosse for an upbeat performance of big band and vocal jazz holiday favorites. The concert will feature the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra, UW-L Instrumental and Vocal Jazz Ensembles, and the LaX Jazz4tet. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Selections from Glenn Miller, The Big Phat Band, Michael Buble, The Airmen of Note and a host of new and seasoned artists are planned. As always the concert reaches its climax with the performance of the Nutcracker Suite from the Les Brown Band. Santa Claus is expected to make an appearance. The show is a sell out every year so buying tickets early is suggested. Admission is $5 for students and $10 for others. Reserved tickets with table seating are $20. UW-L Vocal Jazz Ensembles give holiday concert Dec. 8

The UW-La Crosse vocal jazz ensembles will perform their second annual "Holiday Harmonies" concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, in Annett Recital Hall in the Center for the Arts. Admission is a $2 donation. The concert will feature all four of UW-L’s vocal jazz ensembles: “Voices on Vine,” directed by student director Tiffany Townsend; “Maroon and Gray,” directed by music faculty member Aliyah Richling; and “La Capella” and “The Collegiates,” directed by Music Professor Gary Walth. The ensembles will perform a variety of arrangements of favorite holiday songs and carols, both a cappella and accompanied by rhythm section. The all-female group La Capella will premiere "We See the Babe," Walth's newest composition. Arrive early; seating is limited. Concert is in special setting this year Music at this year’s Festival of Carols at UW-La Crosse will be performed in a special, festive setting. The five performing ensembles will be on the set of the Theatre Arts Department’s production of “A Christmas Carol.” The 21st annual UW-L Festival of Carols begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in Toland Theatre in the Center for the Arts, 16th and Vine streets. The Festival of Carols will feature the UW-L Orchestra, led by J. Thomas Seddon; the Women’s Chorus, conducted by Aliyah Richling; the Chamber Choir with music director Terence Kelly; and the Männerchor and Concert Choir, conducted by Gary Walth, director of Choral Studies. Traditional carols and those in new arrangements will be performed, as well as featured works including the Chamber Choir’s "Sweet was the Song" by Jens Klimek, and Daniel Pinkham’s “Christmas Cantata” with the Concert Choir and double brass choir. Männerchor will premiere Walth’s new setting of “Of The Father’s Love Begotten.” The orchestra will perform several movements from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Ballet.” The concert will conclude with two choruses from Handel’s “Messiah” and Leroy Anderson’s “Christmas Festival.” General admission is $10. Tickets go on sale Wednesday, Dec. 4. Tickets may be purchased in advance in Room 145 of the Center for the Arts, or by calling 608.785.8415 between 1 and 4 p.m. weekdays. Tickets will also be sold at the door beginning at 12:45 p.m.; doors open at 1:15 pm.
