Dumpster Diversion will help students keep their unwanted furniture, appliances, electronics and other supplies out of landfills.

Four locations, three schools, two weekends and one environment. The third annual Dumpster Diversion event has begun. It will help students keep their unwanted furniture, appliances, electronics and other supplies out of landfills.
Students from UW-L, Viterbo University and Western Technical College are encouraged to bring their furniture, working or non-working electronics, appliances, clothes, housewares and nonperishable food to any of the Dumpster Diversion sites, and Dumpster Diversion will donate it to local charities.
“We would rather see these items recycled and used again, instead of sitting in a landfill,” says Char Wegner, account clerk for the City of La Crosse Recycling Department, who is helping with the event. “There are so many organizations in our area that benefit from the things students no longer need.”
Students can donate their items from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18. Sites are located on 8th and Market streets, 13th and Pine streets and in the parking lot of Taco Bell and Toppers on West Ave.
In 2012, more than 1,800 pounds of electronics were recycled. A semi and a half was filled and donated to local charities and organizations.
“In the past, these items would have been left on the boulevards and ended up in the landfill,” notes Wegner.
Volunteers are still needed to hand out literature or help out at the event. Students and community members can also help by spreading the word to students and landlords, so they can advertise to their college student tenants.
Dumpster Diversion kicked off on April 26 and 27 at Lot F at Western Technical College. They collected a truckload of electronics that were taken to Earth Fair. Clothing, appliances and some home furnishings were taken to TLC Mission.
