Tornado victims in Alabama will be getting a truckload of couches, mattresses and chairs courtesy of UW-La Crosse. As the school year came to a close, the local Lions club contacted UW-L Residence Life to see if they had spare furniture to donate to people who had lost their homes. The university happened to have 80 mattresses, 40 desk chairs and 15 couches that had been used in the residence halls for years. They were piled into a semi truck on Monday, May 16. “We were going to get rid of them,” says Nick Nicklaus, UW-L director of residence life. “It’s great everything came together to provide the tornado victims with the excess furniture we had.” Lions Club International assists with disaster relief around the world, said Art Marson, former international director of the Lions Club. “We believe we can help people less fortunate than ourselves,” explains Marson. “We appreciate the cooperation of the university. The best way to get things done is to work together as partners.”
