Social media, such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, accelerates the dissemination of information, but is the information always reliable? True? UW-L's Director of Academic Technologies Jim Jorstad will present "The Global Influence of Social Media in Politics and in Our Lives" at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in 1309 Centennial Hall. At this free talk, Jorstad will discuss the power of social media and its reach. He'll show footage, imagery and citizen journalism highlighted on CNN, MSNBC, and other news media and blog postings, and how it can reinforce or change what we believe is true or false. He'll share how live polling is used to understand population demographics and how it can affect voting and perceptions. Jorstad is a Frye Institute Fellow, an international author, speaker, and CNN iReport journalist. The event is sponsored by UW-L's Political Science Department and UW-L's Select Committee on Internationalization.
