‘Innovation vs. Invention’

Matt Ridley, a British businessman and journalist, will give a presentation at UW-La Crosse Wednesday, Oct. 19. The presentation, "Innovation vs. Invention," explores how science, technology and freedom relate to innovation.

Businessman, journalist Matt Ridley to speak at UWL Oct. 19

Matt Ridley, a British businessman and journalist known for his writings on science, the environment and the economy, will give a presentation at UW-La Crosse Wednesday, Oct. 19.

Ridley will share “Innovation vs. Invention: What do science, technology, and freedom have to do with innovation?” from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Cameron Hall of Nations, 1300 Centennial Hall.

The event is open to all members of the campus community, especially students from the College of Business Administration. There is no cost or registration required.

Ridley, 64, is the author of several books, which have sold over a million copies and been translated into 31 languages. His works include “The Red Queen,” “Genome, “The Rational Optimist” and “The Evolution of Everything.”

Ridley has had a prolific career in journalism, including nine years as science editor, Washington correspondent and American editor at the Economist. He writes regularly for The Times (London) and the Wall Street Journal. He founded the Wall Street Journal’s “Mind and Matter” column in 2010.

Ridley has won several awards for his work, including the Hayek Prize in 2011, the Julian Simon Award in 2012 and the Free Enterprise Award from the Institute of Economic Affairs in 2014.

He holds a bachelor’s degree and a doctor of philosophy degree from Oxford University.
