Jazz in the Park 2012 concludes with a Riverside Jazz Party at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Riverside Park. The party kicks off with the Laura Cavianni Quartet at 7 p.m., followed by Sparta native Brian Hemstock at 8 p.m.
Hemstock, formerly with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, will make his first appearance with the La Crosse Jazz Orchestra. Hemstock was the male vocalist for the Glenn Miller Orchestra from 2009-11 and recently released his first solo album, “Handful of Stars,” with Frank Sinatra-like swing tunes, beautiful ballads, pop and contemporary tunes.
Hemstock graduated from Western Michigan University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in jazz studies: emphasis in voice. While at Western, Hemstock was a member of Gold Company, an award winning vocal jazz ensemble. Hemstock has worked with some of the jazz greats in master classes: including Fred Hersch; Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood; Bobby McFerrin, Chick Corea, and Jack Dejohnette; and Luiciana Souza. He also studied with Professor Diana Spradling, author of “Jazz Singing: Developing Artistry and Authenticity.”
Caviani, a piano composer and arranger, has performed and recorded for more than 15 years. As leader, she has recorded four albums, which have received rave reviews from the Star Tribune, Jazz Times, St. Paul Pioneer Press and other sources. Caviani has recorded and toured with the 2002 Grammy nominee Karrin Allyson. Appearing with Caviani is Pete Whitman, a saxophonist, composer and arranger based in Minneapolis. Whitman has also recorded extensively as a sideman and has three CDs out under his name. Caviani will also perform with Chris Bates, on bass, who has played on more than 30 albums and Phil Hey, on drums, who has been one of the busiest and most respected drummers in the Twin Cities music scene since the 1970s.
