A campuswide common reading program hopes to get everyone on the same page and moving toward a more sustainable path.
Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to read “No Impact Man” by Colin Beavan before he arrives on campus in early October.
“It’s a thought-provoking book,” says Chris Dziekan, UW-L assistant director of the New Student Orientation program. “It makes you think about your actions. It made me go out and buy those green, recyclable shopping bags.”
The past four years the campus community has joined to read one book at the start of the school year. This year the book’s theme matches a campus-wide sustainability initiative, which kicks off in September. In the book, Beavan challenges readers to give up wasteful habits and lessen their impact on earth.
Joining in the reading program is also an easy way to meet people, says Dziekan. Discussion groups will be organized in the fall to give people an opportunity to talk about the book’s themes. The light read will also help get students get back into the swing of school, says Dziekan.
Books are available at the campus bookstore for $15 new and $11.25 used. The book can also be purchased at other bookstores and online.
Those who read the book, attend a common reading orientation session, participate in a small group discussion and attend the author’s Oct. 5 lecture will be entered into a drawing to win a bike and receive an environmentally-themed mug. Following Beavan’s visit, UW-L will participate in its own “No Impact” week.
“This book tackles a really important issue," says Dziekan. "People will come away with something that changes their life — even if it’s as small as buying re-useable shopping bags."
