Professors study the potential of toxic lead contamination in the marsh

Geography isn’t just the study of where cities are located on a map. It goes much deeper. For two UW-L professors and their students it has taken them deep down into the mud of the La Crosse River marsh. There they’ve found something surprising — and potentially a threat to the waterfowl, muskrats, turtles and other species that live there.

On-air tribute to James Conway

Listen to an on-air tribute to the late James Conway, UW-L faculty emeritus, on the WLSU website. Conway was the founding station manager of WLSU, UW-L’s campus Wisconsin Public Radio station. The tribute includes an extended interview with Conway’s friend and former colleague UW-L Professor Emeritus John Jenks. He shares his recollections of Conway, his professional and personal accomplishments, and WLSU's founding in an interview with current WLSU/WPR Regional Manager John Gaddo, himself a student of Conway's in the 1970s.

Carol Kirk

UW-L Professor Emeritus Carol Kirk died July 9, at her home in Fond du Lac. Kirk had been battling cancer for the past year, according to her close friend and colleague in the Department of Educational Studies. She retired from UW-L in 2005. She came to campus in 1988 and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in reading/literacy. She served as director of the UW-L Graduate Reading Program, and also was the director and driving force behind the Reading Evaluation and Development (READ) Clinic, which served the needs of young, struggling readers in the community and surrounding area. Kirk was well known in area school districts for her work with pre-service and in-service teacher education. Classified ad artwork.
