Keeping UW-L traditions alive

Hoeschler Tower

As 2011 comes to a close, we want to say thank you for your past membership in the UW-L Alumni Association. We appreciate your ongoing support and encourage you to renew today. Of all the traditions that are part of “The La Crosse experience,” one stands out as the most unique and memorable — the Hanging of the Lantern. Originally, this was done during Homecoming when English professor O.O. White wrote a letter to one of our alums welcoming the UW-L graduate back to campus. He said: We’ll hang the lantern in the old college clock tower over the south door. You won’t need a key, the door will be open.” The lantern hung on the south side of Graff Main Hall until 1997 when it was permanently moved to the Hoeschler Tower in the center of campus. With your membership, the Alumni Association maintains the Lantern tradition and keeps you informed through the alumni magazine. In addition, the association provides invitations to reunions; offers Legacy scholarships; networking opportunities; discounts at areas merchants and on auto, home and long-term care insurance. Most importantly, membership supports programs that strengthen UW-L. Visit www.uwlalumni.org for a complete calendar of events. If you are interested in volunteering or participating in one of our programs, contact the Alumni Association for more information. Renew today and keep “The La Crosse Experience” alive for generations to come! Join or renew online at www.uwlalumni.org or call toll free at 877.895.2586
