Mark of excellence

The UW-La Crosse Police Department has been fully accredited by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group following a rigorous review process this spring.

UWL Police receive highly prized accreditation

The UW-La Crosse Police Department is in elite company.

In early April, the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Accreditation Group (WILEAG) awarded the department full accreditation — a prized distinction reflecting outstanding professionalism and accountability in law enforcement.

Nationwide, just 8% of departments or agencies are fully accredited, illustrating the level of excellence UWL Police have managed to reach and maintain.

Office Bear, UWL's emotional support K9, is the newest addition to the campus police force.

“It’s one thing to say we’re committed to excellence — it’s another to prove it on paper, in practice and through performance,” says UWL Police Chief Allen Hill. “Our officers’ collaboration, attention to detail and unwavering commitment to excellence not only made this possible, but also set the standard for others to follow. This milestone represents more than a certificate on the wall. It’s a powerful affirmation of our shared values, our services to the community and our continuous pursuit of improvement.”

A team of assessors from WILEAG visited UWL in March to examine all aspects of the UWL Police Department’s policies, procedures, management, operations and services. This included an information session where members of the public were invited to provide feedback about the department. Public comments were also accepted in writing and over the phone.

Chancellor James Beeby says the accreditation confirms what many people already know: that the UWL Police Department is a valuable asset to the campus and the community.

“The work of a police department is most noticeable during times of crisis, but the mark of a great police force is its ability to protect and serve the community every single day,” Beeby says. “The UWL Police Department holds itself to the highest standards, serving the community with compassion and integrity. I am glad to see them recognized for their excellent service, which makes UWL and the city of La Crosse a safer place for everyone.”

WILEAG accreditation is a voluntary process for Wisconsin law enforcement agencies. Reaccreditation is traditionally sought after three years.

"Accreditation is essential in maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and accountability in law enforcement," Hill says. "It ensures that our department operates with transparency, adheres to best practices and continuously improves to serve our community effectively.”
