It’s more than just photos

UWL faculty, staff and students should consider Murphy Library Digital Collections for use in lectures, coursework and research. The Digital Collections offer free access to thousands of locally and historically significant materials ranging from text- and image-based content to audio recordings. Working with Special Collections and other campus units, Digital Collections staff convert materials from print or analog to digital formats to ensure long-term preservation within a stable and flexible user interface. Some of what’s available in the Digital Collections:
  • Historical photographs, including images of the 15,000 Cuban refugees who came to Fort McCoy in the 1980s’ era Freedom Flotilla and the Burgess Photograph Collection of images taken for the La Crosse Tribune from 1935 to 1970.
  • The Fred Lesher Collection of more than 3,000 pages of Coulee Region ornithological field notes and journals.
  • Records of local significance, including La Crosse City Board of Trade ReportsLa Crosse County Historical Sketches.
  • Historical newspapers, including the LGBT newsletter “Leaping La Crosse,” and “The Wisconsin Labor Advocate.”
  • Publications from UWL, including “The Racquet,” UWL alumni newsletters “The Alumnus” and “The Lantern,” the literary journal “Steam Ticket: A Third Coast Review,” the undergraduate publication “The Catalyst,” the UWL Journal of Undergraduate Researchstudent handbooks going back to the first in 1921, UWL theater posters and playbillsUWL yearbooks, college and unit newsletters, and similar.
  • A growing collection of streaming oral histories, some of which are full-text searchable.
