Photographs that explore the enduring presence and significance of flowers in Hmong culture will fill the UW-La Crosse University Art Gallery during September. “Pao Houa Her: My Mother’s Flowers” opens the 2018-19 University Gallery season with a reception from 4-6 pm. Thursday, Sept. 6, in the University Art Gallery, located on the first floor of the Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St. Her will give an artist talk at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, in the gallery. The exhibition runs through Thursday, Sept. 27. The events are free and open to all. Her is recognized for provocative and unflinching photographs of the Hmong, indigenous people of Laos who immigrated to the U.S. at the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. Her family fled Laos in 1983 before finally settling in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1986. In “My Mother’s Flowers,” Her explores through a highly personal lens the enduring presence and significance of flowers in Hmong culture. This is her inaugural solo exhibition that was first hung in Bockley Gallery in Minneapolis in 2016. Her, born in 1980 in Laos and raised in St. Paul, currently lives in Lino Lakes, a suburb of the Twin Cities. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and a Masters in Fine Arts in photography from the Yale University School of Arts in New Haven, Connecticut. Regular gallery hours are noon-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, noon-5 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and by appointment and during events in Toland Theatre. Admission is free. Funding for this exhibition is provided by the UWL Provost Office and the College of Liberal Studies. The exhibit is part of an initiative to bring more Hmong professionals and leaders to campus.
