National sports, fitness advocate to visit UW-La Crosse

The president-elect of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education will be on campus to speak about the importance of physical activity and the growing problem of inactivity among children.

[/caption] The president-elect of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education will be at UW-La Crosse to speak about the importance of physical activity and the growing problem of inactivity among children. Stephen Mitchell, professor of sports pedagogy at Kent State University, will lead five presentations as this year’s visiting scholar for the Exercise and Sport Science Department. His presentations include: Monday, March 4: • 7:45-9:45 a.m. — “Advocacy for Quality Physical Education,” 259 Cartwright Center • 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. — “Standards-Based Assessment in Physical Education,” 259 Cartwright Center • 1:30-3 p.m. — “Teacher Preparation” Faculty Round Table, 109 Mitchell Hall • 6:30-7 p.m. social and 7-8:30 p.m. community presentation on “PE 2020 and Beyond,” 119 Mitchell Hall Tuesday, March 5: • 8-10 a.m. — “Tactical Model for Elementary and Secondary,” Mitchell Hall Field House Mitchell was elected to the president-elect position of NAPSE last spring at the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance’s (AAHPERD) annual national convention in Boston. As a national spokesperson, he promotes quality physical education, physical activity, and sports programs and lends expertise to tackle the growing epidemic of physical inactivity in children and the importance of physical activity. The presentations are free and open to all.
