‘Nearly Naked’ run planned at UW-La Crosse

Posted 8:52 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, 2011

Students and others will take part in the 5th annual “Nearly Naked” race at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Hoeschler Tower.

UW-L students living in Laux Hall hope to raise money for schools in Africa while having fun during a campus mile run. Students and others will take part in the 5th annual “Nearly Naked” race at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Hoeschler Tower. Registration is $2; T-shirts and registration are available for $10. Registration fees and donations will go toward the Brick by Brick campaign, part of the Free the Children project will raise money to build schools in impoverished areas of Africa. The central idea of the run is that college students pledge donations to dress in scantily-clad clothing, or "nearly naked", and run "nearly" a mile. Participants are also encouraged to bring clothing for a local women’s shelter. Those “Strippin’ for a Reason” by donating 20 articles of clothing will receive a free T-shirt. Last year nearly 800 participants raised around $3,500 and more than 2,000 articles of clothing. This year, they hope to raise more than that amount and potentially break a Guinness World Record. The event was created by UW-L students for UW-L students and now invites the community to take part. The race is organized by Laux Hall, with cooperation from the UW-L Residence Life Office and Residence Hall Honorary Council.
