Oct. 22-28 is the sixth annual International Open Access week, celebrating the growing movement to provide free and open access to the world’s scholarly, scientific and cultural heritage resources. Open Access Defined Open Access (OA) refers specifically to scholarly output in digital format being freely accessible to the public via the Internet. This free access is a direct result of the author or copyright-holder consenting to offer his or her scholarly output free of most copyright and licensing restrictions. Through such consent, scholarly output is made freely available, thereby reducing the barriers to the dissemination of and access to information, resulting in more open and clear scholarly communication. What’s in YOUR repository? The open access repository for the University of Wisconsin is Minds@UW. It includes research papers and reports, pre-prints and post-prints, datasets and other primary research materials, learning objects, theses, student projects, conference papers and presentations, and other born-digital or digitized research and instructional materials. Take a look at the growing collection of UW System open access resources at http://uwdc.library.wisc.edu/minds. Contributing to the repository To contribute to the open access repository at Minds@UW, please use this inquiry form to begin the process. Learning more The Right to Research Coalition has guides that help people learn about open access and how they can be involved. For a guide for students go to www.righttoresearch.org/act/individuals/index.shtml and for a guide for faculty/staff go to www.righttoresearch.org/act/professors/index.shtml.
