OCW Book Club teams up with the Greater La Crosse Community's BIG READ.

UWL’s Organization for Campus Women book club will be reading “A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines. The book was also selected for the “Big Read,” an area-wide book reading this fall made possible through a $14,000 National Endowment for the Arts Big Read grant that UWL's English Department received.

Everyone is encouraged to attend the OCW book club meetings. The first will be from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, at Murphy’s Mug in Murphy Library.

Even people who haven’t read, started or finished the current book are welcome. Meetings typically take place at noon in Murphy’s Mug, but this is subject to change. Contact Jaralee Richter, jrichter@uwlax.edu for more information.

“A Lesson Before Dying” by Ernest J. Gaines is set in the fictional community of Bayonne, Louisiana, in the late 1940s. “A Lesson Before Dying” tells the story of Jefferson, a twenty-one-year-old uneducated black field worker wrongfully accused and convicted of the robbery and murder of a white man, and sentenced to death by electrocution.
