UWL Professor Emeritus Jim Gallagher will share his favorite archaeological sites from the more than 20 trips he has taken to Ireland.
Gallagher, who taught archaeology while serving as director of the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, will speak on “Jim Gallagher's Favorite Archaeological Places in Ireland” during the center’s annual awards presentation Thursday, Nov. 12. A social begins at 6 p.m. with announcement of awards at 6:30, followed by Gallagher’s presentation at 7. All are in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition, and free and open to all.
Gallagher’s most recent trip to Ireland was in June. He has hiked hundreds of miles along the island's many walking routes and visited most of the important archaeological sites. His talk will explain the colorful history of ancient cultures on the islands along with showing lots of photos of sites ranging from spectacular burial chambers to precipitous mountaintop forts.
Gallagher organized and led hiking tours to Ireland from La Crosse for 15 years. During his presentation, he'll show artifacts ranging from Iron Age bog bodies to golden treasures. And, he will share stories and scenic photos from his many hikes.
