True to university’s active and engaged environment, employees take home the state's Million Steps Challenge trophy for UW System

Staying true to UW-La Crosse’s founding principles of education of the whole person — mind and body — the university has earned statewide accolades for its physical activity.

UWL earned the 2019 Million Step Challenge award for all UW System institutions. UW System President Ray Cross presented the award to UWL Director of Human Resources John Acardo at the State Capitol Wednesday, Dec. 4.

The Million Steps Challenge employer competition challenged state employees to get moving and track their steps online January 2019 through the end of October. Statewide employers competed against each other and each month the employer with the highest average steps per participant received the Million Steps Challenge Trophy.

Over the course of the entire competition, participating UWL employees tracked a total of 2,286,504 steps. This was more than any other UW System campus tracked and also more than all state employees tracked except for district attorneys — a group that tracked 2,614,159 steps.

UWL was also able to kept the trophy for all months of the competition except one, when UW-Platteville pulled ahead.

This challenge was one of the Well-Being Activities offered by StayWell, an independent provider of health promotion programs and services that specializes in helping organizations improve the health and well-being of their participants.

The Well Wisconsin Program is administered by Staywell. The voluntary program aims to help employees maintain or improve their current state of health and well-being and help lower health risk and health care costs.
