Today people have the tools to be connected anywhere. But are we really disconnected? Hear what UW-L Director of Academic Technologies says about a technological turning point in this TEDx Video.

People will stand in line and make a cell phone call that travels thousands of miles up to a satellite, back down to earth to another person standing a few feet away. People may believe they are connected, but in many ways they are equally disconnected, says Jim Jorstad, UW-L Director of Academic Technologies. And that disconnection prevents people from finding and telling deep, personal stories, or as Jorstad, says “We don’t dive deep to find the emotional stories right in front of us.” Jorstad was one of six people from the UW-L campus and La Crosse community who shared his story Nov. 12 at UW-L. As part of a TEDx event, people from the UW-L campus and community shared short stories about “turning points” in society or their personal lives. These stories will be shared on UW-L's homepage over the next month. Many are familiar with TED Talks, an award-winning video site that is a branch of the TED non-profit organization. TEDx events are independently coordinated to give communities, organizations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level. Jorstad, a journalist and filmmaker, researches how people use social media and digital storytelling. His “turning point” in life was when he decided to break societal disconnection by crafting inspirational digital stories and sharing them. Today his work has been viewed by nearly 1 million viewers around the world. Other turning points from the speakers involved technology, health, children, men’s emotions and everyone’s self awareness.
